You should pay attention to its parts, stanzaic form (rhythm and rhyme), spatial division, Lady and Lancelot, supernatural elements, explanation of the conclusion, etc. The Lady of Shalott was written by Alfred Tennyson. The poem tells the story of Lady Shalott. A woman who lives as a prisioner inside a castle. She is weaving what she can see through a mirror, because she can not look at Camelot directly. If she looks to Camelot, a curse will fall on her. We can find many symbol into the poem like: The river: It represents the course of the life. The river where the story started, we can see that the castle is near to the river and the other elements which are around it. And where the story finished, the lady follows a way untill she arrives to Camelot. The mirror: It is a supernatural element of the poem. It represents the desire(to go outside the castle), the longing(To live with people) and the forbidden (She is obliged to be there) The island: in the river, cut off from the land and the outside world, is a major symbol of the Lady's isolation and loneliness. The boat and the inscription on it: They represent the lady herself. The boat goes throughout the river until her death. And the inscription suggests the sign of her death to remember her. Sir Lancelot: He represents the temptation of her. METER AND RHYME Meter: The poem has nineteen stanzas, all of them are completely equal about the meter. Here we have one stanza which is divided into two equal parts. The first four verse are Iambic tetrameters, while the last verse is compound by three Iambic feets. Rhyme: On either side the river lie A Long fields of barley and of rye, A That clothe the wold and meet the sky; A And thro' the field the road runs by A To many-tower'd Camelot*; B And up and down the people go, C Gazing where the lilies blow C Round an island there below, C The island of Shalott*. B *We can see how at the end of the stanzas the poet repeats the words Camelot and Shalott. The poet uses each of this words to emphasizes the public and the private. The public is represented by Camelot and the private by Shalott.
