Thelma and Louise is a film in which social minorities will take center stage and confront the subalternity imposed by the patriarchal system. In this way, road movies will undergo an important transformation, as the romantic perspective and the happy ending will be set aside. Despite the modifications, road movies are still a representation of a rupture with the roots, a psychological experimentation, a search for or reaffirmation of the self and a metamorphosis of the characters. This is a film about two women's relationship and their journey to discover who they are as women. The road trip that Thelma and Louise take is a metaphor for the journey that their lives undergo in this film, even though they do not realize that the trip will lead them onto a spiritual journey of self-discovery. Furthermore, the metaphor for empowerment that runs throughout the film is that it can only be obtained via aggression. The character of this journey is double, on the one hand there is the real journey on the road, but at the same time there is a symbolic and spiritual journey of the characters. The latter is a fundamental feature of a road movie, if there is no spiritual journey, it would be a simple travel film. For females, the roadway poses a special risk, which they develop to overcome, as seen by their aesthetic and bodily modifications. In the end, they decide to face the void (suicide) rather than turn themselves into the police (patriarchal order). Thelma and Louise are physically pushed to the brink of death, but they're also pushed to the brink of liberation, their long-awaited spiritual journey. These two have reached the conclusion of their patriarchal exodus.
