ARTHROPODS These are the general characteristics of the phylum Arthropoda: The body is divided into segments. Paired and jointed appendages (legs, antennae, claws, and external mouth parts) Exoskeleton (hard outer covering made of chitin and no internal bones). Periodically, the rigid exoskeleton is shed in a process called moulting. Bilateral symmetry (each side is a mirror image of the other side). Specialised mouth parts Compound eyes (like a fly) The circulatory system an open one, the only blood vessel usually being a tubular structure dorsal to the alimentary canal with lateral openings in the abdominal region. The nerves run along the lower part of the body below the digestive system all except the brain. Respiration by means of gills, or tracheae and spiracles. The sexes nearly always separate.
