María había estado estudiando mucho, sobre todo para el examen de Matemáticas, porque tenía muchos problemas con esa materia. La noche anterior al examen no durmió mucho. Estudiaba hasta las 3 am y luego no dejaba de pensar en Matemáticas. Finalmente se durmió alrededor de las 6 am. Sus padres la despertaron a las 7 am antes de irse a trabajar, pero se volvió a dormir. Se despertó al mediodía, ¡habiéndose perdido el examen de Matemáticas! Como resultado, María no pudo ir a las vacaciones de playa que tenía planeadas en junio. En cambio, tuvo que quedarse en casa, estudiando su materia menos favorita: ¡matemáticas! A NARRATIVE A FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE PAGE 114 MINDSET 1 The most frightening experience that I've ever had happened while I was looking after my cousin's children, Ellen, aged six, and Harry, aged six months. In the beginning, everything was fine. I arrived at my cousin's house at six o'clock in the evening, I gave the children their dinner before I helped them get ready for bed. I read them a story, and after a while, it looked like they were falling asleep. I went into the living room, but as soon as I sat down on the sofa, Ellen started screaming, I ran into the children's bedroom and saw that Harry was choking. Ellen told me that he had put something in his mouth. I hesitated at first, but then I remembered something I'd seen online: I put the baby stomach-down on my arm and hit him on the back several times. At last, a small toy popped out of his mouth, and Harry started crying, I was so relieved! I called my cousin, and told her what had happened. She came home and took Harry to hospital while I stayed with Ellen. Thankfully, Harry was OK, but the outcome of that night's events could have been totally different. I am very thankful that I knew what to do! UNA NARRATIVA UNA EXPERIENCIA ATERRADORA PÁGINA 114 MINDSET 1 La experiencia más aterradora que jamás haya tenido sucedió mientras cuidaba a los hijos de mi prima, Ellen, de seis años, y Harry, de seis meses. Al principio, todo estaba bien. Llegué a la casa de mi prima a las seis de la tarde, les di la cena a los niños antes de ayudarlos a alistarse para dormir. Les leí un cuento y, después de un rato, parecía que se estaban quedando dormidos. Entré a la sala, pero tan pronto como me senté en el sofá, Ellen comenzó a gritar, corrí a la habitación de los niños y vi que Harry se estaba ahogando. We decided to go early and spend the day doing a bit of shopping and taking in some of the sights. The night before, we booked our train tickets online so we could get an early start. When we got to the station, there were crowds of people trying to get on the train. Alan and I lost sight of each other and landed up in different carriages. I wasn’t worried – I knew we would meet up at the other end. An hour later, our train pulled into Waterloo Station. I got off and stood on the platform waiting for Alan. The train emptied out and went on its way, but Alan was nowhere to be seen. I tried to phone him, but there was no answer. I felt completely helpless. Shocked, I sat down on a bench – where was he? About half an hour later, I heard him calling me from the other side of the station. It turned out that he had fallen asleep and missed the station. He had had to get off at the next stop and wait for a train going in the opposite direction, back to Waterloo. Why didn’t he answer his phone? He had left it at home! In the end, we had a great time, but what a way to start our day in London! 7 b) UNA NARRATIVA – EL TREN A LONDRES (MENTALIDAD 1 1º BACH PÁGINA 180 OPCIONAL) El fin de semana pasado, mi hermano Alan y yo teníamos entradas para un concierto de Megatrax en Londres. Decidimos ir temprano y pasar el día haciendo un poco de compras y disfrutando de algunos de los lugares de interés. La noche anterior, reservamos nuestros boletos de tren en línea para poder comenzar temprano. Cuando llegamos a la estación, había una multitud de personas tratando de subirse al tren. Alan y yo nos perdimos de vista y aterrizamos en vagones diferentes. No estaba preocupado, sabía que nos encontraríamos en el otro extremo. Una hora más tarde, nuestro tren llegó a la estación de Waterloo. Me bajé y me paré en la plataforma esperando a Alan. El tren se vació y siguió su camino, pero Alan no estaba a la vista. Intenté llamarlo por teléfono, pero no hubo respuesta. Me sentí completamente impotente. Sorprendido, me senté en un banco, ¿dónde estaba? Al final, lo pasamos muy bien, pero ¡qué manera de empezar nuestro día en Londres! 26 8) A REPORT OF AN EVENT – THE ANNUAL INTERSCHOOL SPORTS DAY This year, the annual interschool sports day was held on Saturday 25 th March. Our school hosted the event, which included athletics and track events, as well as the popular interschool football tournament. This year, three girl’s football teams participated in the event for the first time. Greenfield Secondary won the school athletics competition, with 178 points. A number of new records were set, including for long-jump (S Blake), 100m sprint (R B Hastings) and pole-vault (F Shaw). One of the most exciting events was definitely the relay race, which Bishop Bell Secondary won, beating Greenfield by just half a second. In addition to the sports events, there were lots of other fun activities. Music was provided by our very own Purple Heats band, and DJ Harley made an unexpected guest appearance. There were also food stalls offering a selection of vegan treats as well as the usual hamburgers and hot dogs. The atmosphere was fantastic, and it was clear that the crowd were enjoying the wonderful weather. All in all, the event was a huge success. A big thank you to all the volunteers who worked at the food stalls, the first-aid tent and the children’s activities -we couldn’t have done it without you! 8) INFORME DE UN EVENTO: EL DÍA ANUAL DEL DEPORTE INTERESCOLAR Este año, el día sábado 25 de marzo se llevó a cabo el día anual del deporte interescolar. Nuestra escuela fue la anfitriona del evento, que incluyó atletismo y atletismo, así como el popular torneo de fútbol interescolar. Este año, tres equipos de fútbol femenino participaron en el evento por primera vez. Greenfield Secondary ganó la competencia de atletismo escolar, con 178 puntos. It's called the Blackpool Magic Convention, and it's the biggest magic convention in the world. Thousands of people come to the convention in order to spend three days learning about magic. This year, my friend Tom and I were finally able to get tickets. 27
