OSTHEOPOROSIS Presented by: Marc Garcia, Manu Ribera and Ramon Rodriguez INDEX  DEFINITION  CLINICAL FEATURES SYGNS SYMPTOMS TEST  RISK FACTORS  PROGNOSIS  PREVENTION  TREATMENT OSTHEOPOROSIS: DEFINITION OSTHEOPOROSIS: DEFINITION Two Plasmacytoid Lymphocytes: Severe arthritis with osteoporosis blood - 100X OSTHEOPOROSIS: DEFINITION  PREVALENCE 20 % of American Women over 50 Age 30% of them: Ostheopenia: Ostheoporosis OSTHEOPOROSIS: DEFINITION  CAUSES Low bone mass when the growth finishes Wealthy diet in protein CLINICAL FEATURES: SYGNS  Not get enough calcium  Break a bone: weakness  Spine deformation CLINICAL FEATURES: SYMPTOMS  No symptoms Symptoms occurring late in disease include:  Fractures of the vertebrae, wrist or hips  Low back pain  Neck pain  Bone pain or tenderness TEST A spine CT: A computed topography of the lower spine and surrounding tissues Desmineralization OSTHEOPOROSIS: RISK FACTORS  Personal history of fracture after 50 age  Being Female  Advanced age  A family History of Osteoporosis  Estrogen deficiency as a result of menopause  Abnormal absence of menstrual period amenorrhea OSTHEOPOROSIS: RISK FACTORS  Anorexia nervosa  Vitamin D deficiency  Low testosterone levels  Current cigarette smoking  Excessive taking of Alcohol  Being Asian, although African, Americans and Hispanic Americans are at significant risk as well OSTHEOPOROSIS: PREVENTION  Make regular exercise: Bone fractures  Don’t smoke  Avoid excess of alcohol intake  Take vitamin D and K (Maintenance of healthy bones )  Take Calcium: 1000-1500mg per day OSTHEOPOROSIS: TREATMENT  The treatments can: Slowing down/ Stopping bone loss Preventing bone fractures Controlling pain OSTHEOPOROSIS: TREATMENT Bisphosponates Raloxifene Calcitonin Estrogen or Hormone Replacement therapy Teriparatide OSTHEOPOROSIS: TREATMENT  Calcitonin Slow the rate of bone loss Relieve bone pain Effects: Nasal irritation and Nausea OSTHEOPOROSIS: TREATMENT Estrogen or Hormone Replacement Therapy Uses: Alone or in combination with progestin decrease the risk of osteoporosis and ostheoporotic fractures in women Negative Effects: Increase the risk for breast cancer, strokes, heart attacks and blood clots OSTHEOPOROSIS: TREATMENT  Teriparathide Form of parathyroid hormone that helps stimulate bone formation Use in postmenopausal women and men at high risk for ostheoporotic fracture
