Alan Espinoza Migration triggers in Honduras Which are the latent triggers of migration in Honduras? ___ Dariela Rivera – Maria Jose Paredes - Viena Sandoval Objective Determine the main cause of migration in Honduras. 2 Specific Objective State why poverty and unemployment are the main causes of migration. Brief Introduction On October 13, 2018 San Pedro Sula was world news, a migrant caravan left for the United States, it would not be the first and it will not be the last. This journey was from Honduras to Guatemala, then Mexico in order to reach the border with the United States. Many Central Americans joined the caravan on the way; it represented security from the dangers of being kidnapped, beaten, and robbed by doing it so clandestinely. Also for the signs of solidarity they received throughout the journey, which are latent, but also those of contempt. However, this forced migration has its origins. Many will wonder why people are fleeing? What is happening in Honduras? Among the causes of migration is the notable unemployment that exists in the country in hand with poverty. “In the 80s of the last century Honduras was a country of reception of migrants and foreign refugees, but in recent decades it has become one of the nations "with the greatest migratory flow of Hondurans abroad” -Gabriela Castellanos ● Studies ➔ Honduras in recent years has managed to create new poverty as cited by the National Institute of Statistics, according to its permanent household survey of 2017, 65.7% of the population is in conditions of poverty during the last decades. The Social Forum on External Debt and Development in Honduras (FOSDEH) points out that it has increased 1.5% in recent years, despite government programs and its millionaire intervention in the creation of failed public policies, instead of reducing poverty it has increased. In turn, the prices of the basic basket are in one of the highest in Central America, equivalent to about 352.3 dollars (8,326 lempiras), while the majority of the population earns a salary between 270-420 dollars per month, with this they must cover, food, housing, transportation and education, many families manage daily to be able to subsist especially in rural areas, 5 ● What job opportunities are available in Honduras for young people aged 18 to 30? Young people lack access to fulfilling jobs because they lack an academic degree. Although the majority of the population is young, businesses prefer experienced workers. Subcontracting is another issue. The private sector and the government are the two largest employers. Wage disparities are enormous. If a young person does not complete high school, she will not be able to find work that pays more than 100 lempiras per day (approximately US$ 4), which is insufficient to eat three times a day. 6 Bibliography Espinoza, L., 2022.
