Paola Posada Olguín Mexican Criminal System On October 15 a Youtuber called Luisito Comunica uploaded a video called “Así viven en una cárcel para enfermos mentales | Topochico, México" which, apart from talking about the recently closed place, has exposed the consequences of the corruption that has preceded the place in recent years. This consequences are referred to the precarious living conditions for inmates along with several crimes committed inside the prison. Following this video, today October 17 Luisito uploaded the sequel of the mentioned video from October 15, which is called “¿Qué hay en una celda de prisión de máxima seguridad? | La nueva cárcel” and talks about the new prison in which the inmates from the previous enclosure are being relocated. This new prison is expected to be of maximum security and prevent what happened in Topochico prison from happening. lt ensures better conditions to the inmates for them to be reformed on their behavior and lifestyle. After analyzing both videos with other people, it came to debate what should be the ideal conditions of a prison for the inmates to be adequately reformed on their lifestyle and behavior. People argue about some poor and homeless people who commit crimes in order for them to have a place to sleep and eat, improving their quality of life. This argument is not against these people trying to improve their quality of life, but against the govemment providing resources to this and more similar prisons that eventually could be full of this kind of people that only look for sustainability. At some point of this situation, overpopulation could be a problem that would mean the lack of control over this enclosures, with the possibility of this enclosures to suffer the same conditions that forced Topochico to be closed. Not enough with what the closing of the prison implies, which is not something that occurs instantly, it also implies that the life conditions of the inmates are not granted, which .in exaggerated terms, can be considered as a vicious circle. On the other hand, the prisons keep their inmates for several years but at some point they are released which facilitates the flow of prisoners. Along with the intention of having an adequate flow of prisoners, the inmates are supposed to go under programs that intend to . reform the inmates. This helpful programs may take the time the inmates are supposed to spend at prison but the factor of spending several years at the same place without having contact with society, living together with other criminals and not having contact with their families, will make people to consider more than two times for committing any crimes, even if that would grant them some place to sleep and food to eat. In conclusion, society if mostly govemed by their laws, but once the laws are broken, there should be there must be a sentence. Most times this sentence means jail and jail should not only be a place for paying for crimes but also to reform the inmates. Since becoming a prisoner not only means punishment but also reformation, this reformation should occur in an adequate environment which implies granting a decent quality of life for inmates. Governments are allowed to spend as much resources as necessary to have a stable society but there are other areas that also need attention and resources such as education, health services, employment and many others.
