Dear Ms. Brown, As social issues are raging all over the world, I think that people are forgetting how much are young people’s opinions important. Indeed, since childhood, we have always been told that our generation is mostly lazy and that we are losing interest in what is taking part in society as well as politic. I am Lilou Couallier, and today I am writing to you as I am, myself, from the ‘’generation Z’’. I am convinced that our voice is counting and that we do have the power to fight and talk about what seems to be unfair or dangerous as well as full-grown up are doing. Indeed, the debate that you are proposing is fascinating as it deals with the influence that had social media on people’s minds, most specifically about Brexit. Our generation is fully aware of the risks that are representing Brexit’s consequences for our society, moreover we grew up surrounded by social media, and we are able to say the positive and even more the negative aspects they can reflect. All those reasons are showing my intention to be a part of this debate as I could be the voice of our generation, but also because it could help in changing people’s minds about our ‘’supposed’’ laziness or lack of consideration. Personally, I do feel like social media are representing a threat when it is about politic. Indeed, those media, such as twitter for instance, are biased and having access to neutral pieces of information is crucial when you have to make a choice. Furthermore, fake news are circulating extremely rapidly and we could easily be fooled. During the debate about Brexit, I really felt like social media’s impacts were too important on people’s decisions, as if they were incapable of thinking by themselves. Additionally, it was terrifying to see how much it divided our entire nation and to what extent people were violent and intolerant. A nuance is worth noting : indeed, when it was about giving neutral pieces of information, social media were good as we have easy access to them. To be more precise, many surveys based on proven sources were great to understand people’s opinions but also the full dynamic of our country concerning the Brexit. I do feel like social media could be a great thing to increase the knowledge of everyone, but they have to be more controled in order to avoid risks with the audience. Sincerely, Lilou Couallier Couallier Lilou Nothing Hill 06 13 70 49 92 May 03, 2023 Ms. Linda Brown BBC 1 Bureau London
