The Oceania is governed by the "Party" led by Big Brother and it is in constant conflict with the other two states. To control the population, the Party invented a "Newspeack" language and they were intimidated by the "Thought Police". Free thought, sex and any expression of individuality are forbidden, but the protagonist, Winston Smith, illegally buys a diary where he records his thoughts and memories for future generations. At the Ministry of Truth he meets a girl Julia, who turns out to be a rebel and together they start a secret affair. One day O'Brien, a member of the "Inner Party", invites them to his apartment to reveal that he is also working against the Party as a member of the "Brotherhood" led by Emmanuel Goldstein and gives them a copy of the fraternity book. When the two start reading the book, soldiers suddenly break in the room and take them to the Ministry of Love, where Winston realizes that O'Brien is a Party spy. He is physically and psy chologically tortured and sent to Room 101, the final destination for those who oppose the Party where he forced to confront his biggest fear. When he is released Winston has completely given up his identity for Big Brother and no longer loves Julia. Setting The novel is set in Oceania, which includes the Americas, Australia and part of Africa. The story takes place in terrible London in 1984. Oceania is divided into three social classes: Inner Party formed by the ruling class (2%), Outer Party by the workers (18-19%) and Proles by the working class. This distinction made by Orwell aims to underline the existence of conflict and class fight, opposed to his socialist idea. A dystopian novel 1984 is a dystopian novel. While utopia is a perfect community ideal, dystopian is a satire of what society exists that is far from perfect. Orwell represents a world controlled by Big Brother through telescreens, where there is no love but only a state of perpetual war. The Party has control over the press, communication and propaganda through the introduction of the Newspeak. Any form of rebellion is punished by prison, torture or liquefaction. The novel represents the totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century. Historical background The novel remembers the Second World War and the idea of the three countries came to Orwell in 1943, the same year as the Tehran conference, where Roosevelt, Churchill and Stallin met to make decisions against Germany and Japan after the war. The Big Brother character represents not only Hilter but also Stalin, because Orwell is against any form of totalitarianism, both from the left and the right of the political spectrum. Charathers Winston Smith represents the last man to believe in human values in this totalitarian society. His sumame is very common in England and suggests its symbolic value and his name evokes Churchill's patriotic appeal during the Second World War ("blood, toil, tears and sweat"). The main concern of the protagonist is that one day no one will remember the story anymore. Winston falls in love with Jiulia, but she is more pessimistic and naive about the Party. But love is considered a crime by the Party. O'Brien is a member of the Inner Party, who deceives the two. He's a mysterious character and finally tortures Winston to repair him under the Party's power. Themes 1984 is a satire on hierarchical societies that destroy fraternity. The director is called Big Brother who controls everything. Memory, trust and interaction between men are positive values for Orwell to maintain individuality. But also decency, tolerance and empathy are important for civil and political coexistence. He also gives a lot of importance to memory, because learning from past mistakes can improve the society of the present. That is why Winston buys a diary to write his own history for future generations. Big Brother is watching you The 1984 novel is set in London, the imaginary capital of Airstrip in Oceania, a totalitarian state. Winston Smith, who is the only person trying to keep control of his identity, lives on the seventh floor of Victory Mansions. On each landing there was a large coloured poster with a middle-aged man with a black moustache and an inscription under "Big Brother is watching you". Inside Winston's apartment a voice came from a metal plate reading a list of numbers, which could not be turned off. Winston had blond hair, rough rosy skin and was dressed in the party's blue uniform. He saw a helicopter in the distance, the police patrol. The television screen was transmitting and receiving at the same time and it could probably watch them. Looking at London from his home, he tried to remember what it was like before, but in vain. From his house he could also look at the Ministry of Truth, a huge pyramidal structure 300 meters high with
