In the British Empire standards of living were gradually rising, but the country’s economy was being surpassed by United States and Germany. This was one of the main causes of the outbreak of the First World war (1914-1918)it will mark irrevocably the worldwide optimism (typical of the beginning of the 20th century).  World war I. the occasion(pretext) for the outbreak was the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 by Serbian student. The war was essentially between German Empire VS Austro-Hungarian Empire on one side, and maritime powers, that were basically Britain VS France. These great powers were joined with alliances to other countries, so when first world war broke, the conflict was extended to all the members, that felt to protect their territorial and economic interests.  War changes. It isn’t an arranged battle, but a war advanced in military technology. Soldier derive from masses that are obliged to take part into the war.  Russian revolution. It breaks after the bolshevik revolution of october 1917 led by Lenin. So the Tsar was forced to abdicate. After the death of lenin. Stalin established a reign of terrormany people died/were imprisoned.  Consequences of the war. On the political/economical sidemany great powers ruined, apart from US. 1919 the treaty of Versailles was established by the allied powersits aim was to avoid to German to built up a new military machine. On the psychological side, war was seen like a terrible experience, because of its deaths,an anti-war feeling was born above all among socialists.  Women start to change their role in societythey can vote thanks to the personality they have showed making works typical of men.  Ireland after the “irish question”. Population was divided into catholic part, that wanted an independent parliament in dublin, instead the protestant part wanted to remain under the britain one. After war irish obtained the parliament and was proclaimed an irish republic .  In indiaa mood of rebellion was born; Gandhi creates a movement protest based on the principles of non-violence and civilization to obtain the indian independence.  The inter-war years. Originally period of optimism, then becomes a dark time. Period of reformsfor example: 1)education actwhich made school compulsory for children over 14 years; 2) ministry of Healt was born.  New fascist partiesof Hitler&Mussolinithat wanted to gave an authoritarian “new order” to the government.
