A PASSAGE TO INDIA Chapter I The narration begins with a discussion on if it is possible to be friends with an Englishman between Mahmoud Ali and Hamidullah; the first disagree with the statement while the latter agrees. Specifically Hamidullah thinks that you can’t be friends with them in India but only in England, he supports hi thesis giving examples. He also substains than any Englishman who comes to India is pleasant for 2 years, while Englishwoman are only pleasant for 6 months. The friends think that only Queen Victoria and Mrs Bannister were nice. Aziz, a doctor and their friend, comes to visit and witnesses that conversation, he then visits his aunt, Hamidulla’s wife. Aziz lost his wife and his 3 children live with their grandmother, because of that his aunt suggests him to marry again but he doesn’t want to. Aziz is called by Dr. Callendar, a civil surgeon, so he leaves; having problems with the tyres of his car he called a tonga. Once at his house Mr. Callendar isn’t there and the servant says there is no message for Aziz. Mrs Callendar and Mrs Lesley are going out and ignoring Aziz they take his tonga; Aziz decides to enter a mosque to rest. Suddenly he sees a woman between the pillars of the mosque and thinking she were wearing shoes he shouted at her; learnt that she were not wearing shoes he apologises and they have a little conversation. The Englishwoman is Mrs Moore and she is arrived in India to visit his son Ronny, the City Magistrate. She has been married twice and both her husband died, and like Aziz has 3 sons. Then they walked back to the club while Aziz left her to the entrance because Indians are not allowed in the club. In the club Mrs Moore talks to Adela, the girl who is engaged to Ronny, about seeing the true India, the argument spreads among those present and one superficially suggests see Indians, the conversation continue and the general attitude towards Indians is of superiority and disrespectful, even the behaviour of Ronny. The Collector, head administrator of Chandrapore, organises a Bridge Party (to create contact between the two communities). Chapter II The party is not a success. The Nawab Bahadur, a rich man and a philanthropist whose opinion is respected, goes to it so many follow him. Among the English people only Adela and Mrs Moore try to talk to some of the indians while Mrs Turton watches disapprovingly. Mr Fielding then thanks Adela for her friendliness and invites her to come to tea at Government College and listening to professor Godbole singing. Adela is happy to accept and suggests invite also Dr. Aziz. Back in their bungalow Ronny has a conversation with his mother asking about Adela, she reveals that Adela thinks the English people are unpleasant to Indians. But Ronny thinks at it in another way: they're not there to be pleasant to Indians but to do justice and keep the peace. After that conversation Mrs Moore is not anymore convinced that they are going to be engaged. Chapter III Fielding has a job at Government College and he enjoys getting to know Indians but the other English people disapproves this; he doesn’t want to give up his friendship from the both sides so he lives between the two worlds. Aziz arrives at his beautiful house and then also Mr Moore and Adela, he finds it easy to talk with them and impulsively invites them for a new meeting at his house, even if he didn’t really mean this because his bungalow is small and dirty. So he suggests another place to meet: the Marabar Caves, a place not known by Aziz and Professor Godbole keeps evading questions on it. Ronny comes to call his mother and Adela to go watch the polo, he behave badly toward Indians ignoring also the invitation to join them. Professor Godbole starts singing a religious song as a greeting, On the way to the Polo Adela and Ronny argue and she reveals that she doesn’t want to marry him anymore. Ronny feels hurt by the news and begins to feel ashamed of his behaviour towards Aziz and other Indians so accept the invitation of the Nawab Bahadur to take them out in his new car. Ronny suggests taking the Marabar road because the one they wanted was being repaired, there the car hit something and they crashed into a tree. They find a passage thanks to Miss Derek who was passing by and once at the bungalow Adela takes back what she said about the marriage and then they announce the engagement to Mrs Moore. The Nawab is worried because 9 years ago he had driven over a drunken man and killed him; even if he paid twice the compensation necessary to the man’s family the ghost of the man continue to wait for him close to the scene of his death. Three days after fielding’s tea party Aziz felt ill and lays in bed. Some guests arrived: Hamidullah, Syed Mohammed, the assistant engineer , engineer’s nephew police inspector Mr Haq, and Mr Fielding. They starts talking about the existence of god and then Hamidullah asks what are the reasons of England ruling over India if not religious ones; the conversation keeps going talking about the contradictions linked with the Englishman in India (qualified Indians who need job, Englishman’s unrespect..). They all leaves but Aziz calls Fielding back to show him a photograph of his wife to thank him for his friendship. At the end Fielding confesses that he is not married because the woman he wanted to marry 15 years ago refused. Chapter IV Aziz organises an expedition to the Marabar Caves, Mr Moore and Adela arrives but Mrs Fielding and Godbole miss the train. Once at the Marabar station an elephant is there to take them to the hills, there in the caves Mrs Moore doesn’t like the atmosphere, dark, hot crowded and smelly, and there is a terrible echo which translates every sound in “boum”, she also feels her face being touched, hits her head and begins to panic. Mrs Moore renounces visiting any other caves while the other visits the higher caves. During the climbing Adela thinks about her engagement and realises she doesn’t love Ronny then she asks Aziz whether he has more than one wife, the question offends him so he goes to a cave and Adela enters too. Aziz doesn’t see her anymore so he goes out and asks the guide if he has seen her, he, frightened of losing a host, run away. Aziz then sees her talking to another lady down on the plain, while going down he find her binoculars and put them in his pocket. Down the hill he finds out that also Fielding is there, brought by Miss Derek. Miss Derek and Miss Quested goes back to Chandrapore. Aziz really likes Mrs Moore and Mr Fielding so he expects they like each other but they don’t. Back in Chandrapore, however, Aziz is unexpectedly arrested by Mr Haq and the accusation is to ask to Mr McBryde, the Superintendent of Police. Chapter V The Collector talks to Fielding and let him know that Miss Quested accuses Aziz of attacking her in the Marabar Caves. The Collector thinks she is right and that the tragedy is due to the attempt to be intimate with Indians. McBryde thinks that all unfortunate natives are criminals at heart because they live south of latitude 30, so he is sure of Aziz's guiltiness, and substaining it i talks about the broken Miss Quested's binoculars found in Aziz's pocket.
