ADPTATIONS AND APPROPRIATIONS This book deals with the intertextuality in the forms of adaptation and appropriation, interested in how art creates art, or how literature is made by literature. From the apparently simple adaptation of a text into movie, theatre or a new literary work, to the more complex appropriation of style or meaning, we can say that all texts are somehow connected to a network of existing texts and art forms. According to the writer, Julie Sanders, adaptation may simply be defined as the transformation of a work of art into another form to another space; while appropriation, on the other hand, is making personal or the replication of what exists in another environment to a new location. Moreover, there are different kinds of adaptations: version, variation, interpretation, and continuation, and it can occur in all sorts of media: books, movies, television shows. The adaptation, so, is the author’s interpretation of that story line, different from the original, indeed there are things that are added and things that are taken out. In this new edition Adaptation and Appropriation explores: • multiple definitions and practices of adaptation and appropriation; • the cultural and politics behind the impulse to adapt; • the global and local dimensions of adaptation; • the impact of new digital technologies on ideas of making, originality and customization; • several ways in which contemporary literature, theatre, television and film adapt, revise and reimagine other works of art; • the impact on adaptation and appropriation of theoretical movements, including structuralism, post-structuralism, postcolonialism, postmodernism, feminism and gender studies; • the appropriation across time and across cultures of specific canonical texts, by Shakespeare, Dickens and others, but also of literary archetypes such as myth or fairy tale. Ranging across genres and concepts from different fields as musicology and the natural sciences, this volume clarifies the complex debates about adaptation and appropriation, offering a much-needed resource for those studying literature, film, media or culture.
