ANIMAL FARM Animal Farm is a novel written by George Orwell, a writer born in the early 1900s in India whose real name is Eric Arthur Blair. It was published in 1945 and it is the unique political allegory of the author and in 1995 it received the W. H. Smith and Penguin Books Great Reads of the century award. Other works by George Orwell that can be remembered are: Burmese Days (his first novel), Down and Out in Paris and London, Homage to Catalonia and Nineteen Eighty-Four, this last novel, together with Animal Farm, brought to the author the world-wide game. Animal Farm is basically the History of a revolution that went wrong. In fact, at the beginning, in the book is shown a farm, called the Manor Farm, ruled by Mr. jones, a lazy man. Once the old Major, a old pig from the farm, gathered all the animals to tell them about a dream of revolution against the men. Three days later the old Major died but the animals continued to carry on the principles the revolution and they gave born to the Animalism. Everything changed one night when Mr. Jones forgot to feed the animal, that was the action that brought the animals to the rebellion. The morning after the farm was completed ruled by the animals, in particular by the pigs, and after it changed its name into Animal Farm. Everything seems to go on quite well: the works and the roles are divided and some rules fixed. But the situation started to go worse everyday more, especially after the expulsion of Snowball, one of the pigs, because after that Napoleon, another pig, took all the control. It started a sort of tyranny where the animals worked more and ate less. The rules were changed at will of Napoleon, the animals that transgressed were killed and the pigs treated with superiority. At the end the others animals couldn't see anymore the difference between the pigs and the men and we can see the great change when the last one of the seven commandments that said “all animals are equal” turned into “all animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others”. The story told in the Animal Farm is all an allegory of a specific form of govern in our society. In fact, according to a more depth research that | did after reading the book, the organization of the farm in the book is ascribable to the Stalin era and the rebellion of the animals equivalents t the Russian Revolution occurred in 1917. Every character is well studied and embodies one specific figure of that period. Let's start talking about Mr. Jones, he is the one that didn't treat the animals well and that's why he is the one from whom they want to rebel. He represents the Tsar Nicola Il and the old government. The old Major, the oldest animal in the farm and the one that dream a reality without men, represents Lenin who, like the old Major, didn't see the progression of the revolution. Napoleon is the pig at the head of the farm that treats the others animals with tyranny and uses the force among them. He also expelled Snowball in order to achieve the supreme power. If we put him in the Russian reality he stays at the place of Stalin. Snowball was the pig at the side of Napoleon after the rebellion but he was less devoted to the corruption and the power. He was the real revolutionary and the one that wanted the best for the farm but after his expulsion Napoleon put the faults for everything over him. He is based on Leon Trotsky. Squealer is another pigs that used to justify all the actions of Napoleon to the others animals. He represents the way with which the government can easily manipulate people through the propaganda that in the URSS was managed by the Pravda. Boxer is a horse that is extremely devoted to work, his motto is “I will work harder” and than also “Napoleon is always right”. During the story he worked until an accident that gave the excuse to Napoleon to send him to death. He embodies Aleksej Stachnov, the model of worker promoted by the Stalin's regime. Mollie is a horse that escaped from the farm because she missed the life before the revolution and in her we can find the Russian aristocracy that went away from Russia and wasn't so interested in the revolt.
