REVIEW OF THE BOOK “WUTHERING HEIGHTS” TITLE: Wuthering Heights AUTHOR: Emily Bronte DATE: 1847 MAIN CHARACTERS: Catherine Earnshaw, Heatcliff, Hindley Earnshaw, Mr. Lockwood. The story is settled in England, during the victorian age, in particular it is settled among 2 houses, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, located in an unspecified region of England. At the beginning of the story, the houses are owned by a man called Mr. Heatcliff, who hosts a man called Mr. Lockwood. Unfortunately Mr. Heatcliff and his family and servants are very rude with Lockwood, and for this reason he would like to leave the house, but he is forced to stay by a storm, so one of the servant offers him a room to sleep until the next morning. In this room Mr. Lockwood finds some books of a girl named Catherine Earnshaw, he begin to read them and eventually he falls asleep. While he is sleeping he has a bad nightmare about the ghost of a girl who asks him to let her in. The next morning he asks a servant to tell him more about the misterious Heatcliff’s family. And thus begings the narration of the story of Heatcliff. Years before Wuthering Heights was owned by a man called Mr. Earnshaw, he had 2 kids, Hindley and Catherine. One day Mr. Earnshaw came back home from a trip and with him he had a kid. The man said he found him alone in a city and he decided to keep him, and to call him Heatcliff. This kid had dark skin, hair and eyes and he looked like a gipsy. Mr. Earnshaw made Heatcliff grow up as one of his kids, but his son Hindley was gelous and he hated him. Despite this Heatcliff didn’t care much because Catherine was his friend. Eventuallt Mr. Earnsahw died and Hindley became the owner of the house. Hindley made Heatcliff live as one of the other servants and he treated him badly. But what was important for Heatcliff was the friendship with Catherine; this friendship grew stronger and became love. However Cathrine had to find a husband and she decided to live a quiet life with Edgar Linton, the son of Mr. Linton who was the owner of Thrushcross Grange. For this reason Heatcliff decided to run away, he became a gambler and playing he earned a big ammount of money. He eventually came back to Wuthering Heights, with the purpose of destroy both families, even thought he still loved Catherine. He married Edgar’s sister and he had a son with her. Then he took possession of Wuthering Heights playing with Hindley who became a gabler too. And to get Trushcross Grange he forced a marriage between Catherine’s daughter (Catherine died in childbirth) and his son. At this point Mr. Lockwood leaves the house and he comes back a year later and he finds out that Heatliff and his son are dead. Now Catherine is free to love Hareton (the son of Hindley). At the end of the novel a boy tells Mr. Lockwood that he saw the ghosts of Heatcliff and Catherine in the moor. In this story the force that guides the characters’ actions is the love between Heatcliff and Catherine and the impossibility of this love is the problem that Heatcliff and Catherine had to face. Personally I really liked the book, wich I found well structured, in particular the ending part, when we find out that Heatcliff died. I like it because while reading it, you can tell that Heatcliff was a
