Literary production: The second period of Joyce's writing sees the transition from a somewhat traditional approach to a stage of experimentation, rich in symbolism and allegory. ULYSSES: -is a novel set in Dublin on Thursday 16th June 1904, the day when Joyce met and fell in love with Nora; -it deals with the day of three characters who, have meetings, wander around Dublin, pay different visits and go to sleep 18 hours later; -the main character is Leopold Bloom, a middle-aged advertising agent, who leaves home at 8 o’clock and returns at 2 am the following morning; -during his wandering he meets, Stephen Daedalus, a young alienated artist who is face its failure(feilia) as an artist. Stephen is a young man looking for maturity, who becomes Bloom’s adopted son; -the other character is Molly, Leopold’s wife, a sensual singer who is planning an afternoon with her lover. -the novel is related to the epic novel “Odyssey” wrote by Homer. Here Ulysses is a hero, who is trying to came back home after the war of Troy. The hero has been associated with the image of a proud and fearless man; -Joyce uses the Odyssey as a structure, arranging (areingin) his characters and events around heroic models of Homer but they have the opposite characteristics; -Leopold Bloom is Ulysses, but he represent the common man, while Ulysses is a fearless hero; -Stephen Daedalus is Telemachus (Ulysses’ son) but while Stephen is an alienated and hopeless young boy without a father, Telemachus face the unknown to in search of his father; -Molly Bloom is Penelope, but while Penelope is faithful and waits her husband for years, Molly has a lover: -Joyce divided Ulysses into 3 Parts (The Telemachiad, The Odyssey, The Nostos) and 18 chapters or «episodes». The last episode, Penelope, finishes with a long Molly’s Monologue, who at the end of the day sums up all her life, the past and the present -Joyce use the classic poem, as a framework for the novel in a continuous parallel between contemporary life and ancient mythology and to order the chaotic present; -the language is rich in images, figures of speech and the vocabulary is large;. The novel evolution happens through the flow of thoughts of the personages: through what they think and what they feel, without no stylistic element that indicates the beginning of the speech of such(sac) personage or the answer of the other, Joyce abolishes the use of question mark or any sign of interconnection, because he is more interested in studying man’s mind than relationship between man and society. The interior monologue depends on the protagonist: for example, Stephen, who is an erudite man, will use a language which reflects his academic education; on the contrary, Bloom will make use of more dialectal expressions and a more modest language. -THEME: human life means suffering, failing but also struggling to rise and seek the good. James Joyce and Italo Svevo They are two of the most famous novelists of the 20th century. They were friends for a long period of their life. Joyce was an Irish man while Svevo was an Italian novelist. In his novels Joyce used the “stream of consciousness” that is the continuous flow of thoughts and sensations that characterizes the human mind while Svevo used the autobiography so the main character is also the narrator of the events of his life. In both the main theme is the illness of man so the main characters are the “inetto” in Svevo and the “paralyzed man” in Joyce, who is conscious of his situation, but incapable to react, to overcome the limits and to “escape”. In Svevo the language is colloquial with a regular syntax while in Joyce there’s the language of the mind, so there aren’t syntactical rules
