Animal Farm (1945) George Orwell wrote Animal Farm as an allegory of the Russian Revolution disguised as an animal fable. Each animal possesses the traits of its species and Orwell has the ability to view it as if from the inside of its mind and thoughts. Characters: Old Major stands for a mixture of Karl Marx, one of the creators of communism and Vladimir Lenin, the communist leader of the Russian Revolution and the early Soviet nation in that he draws up the principles of the revolution. The doctrine he preaches provides the basic belief which later become the Seven Commandments. Napoleon represents the central character as well as the main tyrant and villain of the farm. This pig is the allegory of Stalin because he represents the human frailties of any revolution. Napoleon seems as first to be a good leader but he eventually overcome by greed and soon becomes power-hungry. Snowball is Napoleon's rival. Both pigs wanted a leadership position in the economic and political system. Snowball is an allegory for Leon Trotsky and his bravery is an example to the other animals through his inspiring speeches. Orwell also describes his darker side by showing he's susceptible to greed. Boxer is a horse in Animal Farm and he stands for the loyal and the farm's most hard-working worker. He follows Animalism faithfully without understanding its more intricate details. His name derives from the Boxer Rebellion, which is linked to the rise of Communism in China. The dogs are a metaphor for the Terror State created by Stalin in Russia as a mean of crushing political opposition. Mr Jones is Tsar Nicholas II and Orwell describes him as a drunk farmer who doesn't care about his animals and neglects his farm. Main Themes: • Humour and sarcasm with horrifying scenes and a painful atmosphere. The book presents an initial idealism which can turn into exploitation and also how ordinary people can lose their freedom in small steps.
