Scarica Animal Farm by George Orwell - Plot + main themes e più Temi in PDF di Inglese solo su Docsity! Animal farm is a novel about a group of animals who take control of the farm they live on. It was written by George Orwell and published in 1945. This is an allegorical novel, because it reflects the events of the Russian revolution of 1917. In fact, the animals are all clever representations of Russian politicians, voters and workers and the author used the novel to express his opinions on Russian leaders. PLOT The story is set on a farm near Willingdon, which is poorly managed by the irresponsible and alcoholic farmer Jones. One night the animals, fed up with their master, organise a conference, led by the boar Old Major, at which they decide to kick him out of the farm. When Old Major dies, two young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, assume command and rename the property "Animal Farm". Once they are free of the farmer, life seems to be good for a while and there is hope for a happier future of less work and more food. But then, there will be contrast between the two pigs for the construction of a windmill and they will be also attacked by their neighbour, using blasting powder to blow up the windmill. Even if the animals win the battle, they do so at a great cost, in fact many of them are hurt. As years go by, the pigs start to behave and dress like humans and the novel ends with Napoleon which restores the name "The Manor Farm" and the animals aren’t able to distinguish humans from pigs. He was born in Bengal into a lower-middle-class family and in 1911 he was sent to a preparatory boarding school in England and he won scholarships to two of England’s leading schools: Wellington and Eton. In 1922 he went to Burma as assistant in the Indian Imperial Police, but his dream was to become a writer. Then he returned to England, where he started a writing course and his revulsion against imperialism led him to refuse the bourgeois lifestyle. His work is characterised by biting social criticism, opposition to totalitarianism and support of democratic socialism. He is best known for the allegorical novel “Animal farm” and the anti-utopian novel “Nineteen Eighty-four”, that examines the dangers of totalitarian rules.
