The genre is that of the classic fable, as the protagonists are anthropomorphic animals that symbolize human types. Orwell satirizes the Russian revolution and Stalin's dictatorship in such a ferocious way that the book, written in 1943, could only be published after the war was over, to avoid discord between Great Britain and the Soviet Union. All characters and events find their historical correspondent: Old Major - Marx / Lenin Napoleon - Stalin Snowball - Trotsky Boxer (or Boxer) - Stachanov Berta (or Trifoglio) - poor Russian people, honest and manipulated Moses - The priests Mollie - The nobility Dogs - the merciless Soviet police The sheep - manipulable people who sing the praises of the revolution without thinking Jones - Tsar Nicholas Il Pilkington - France and England Frederick - Germany The Jones factor owns a farm, but is unable to run it: he is alcoholic, incompetent and cruel to animals, which he exploits mercilessly. One evening all the animals gather around Vecchio Maggiore, an elderly and wise pig, who tells them about a dream he had, a world where animals are free from man, living in harmony. Old Major dies shortly after. One day Jones forgot to feed the animals and they chased him away in exasperation. The leading role is taken by two pigs: Napoleon and Snowball. The name "Manor Farm" was changed to "Animal Farm". The commandments of Animalism, their new philosophy, are written on the wall of the stable: 1) Anything that goes on two legs is enemy. 2) Anything that goes on four legs or has wings is friend. 3) No animals will wear clothes. 4) No animals will sleep in a bed. 5) No animal will drink alcohol. 6) No animal will kill another animal.
