GEORGE ORWELL - ANIMAL FARM it is set in a farm group of animals which rebel against their farmer in order to be free they overthrow their farmer who exploits them because they want to set up an equal society where animals work and share the fruit of their labour they think they have achieved their goals but in reality they have only overcome one of the forms of the tyranny the tyranny of Mr Jones have been replaced by a new form of tyranny (pigs) at first the revolution seems to be successful and their life is based on the 7 commandments the pigs take control of the farm and they alter the commandments and they start exploit the other animals pigs become dictators and they arrogate to themselves the privileges that were previously exercised by the humans pigs move from the pigsty to the house and start to behave like Mr Jones did pigs start to sell the eggs so the hens rebel but then they are executed (climax of the gradual development into a dictatorship) OLD MAJOR old / wise / boar pig represents Karl Marx (and Lenin) because embodies the socialist utopia summons all the animal of the farm because he wants to tell them about an inspiring dream he had (about a farm where animals are not exploited and live free) he urges the animals to rebel against the farmer Mr. Jones and teaches them a song old major dies and his skull his exposed in the entrance of the farm MR JONES farmer of Manor house represents the Tsar Nicholas II three pigs (Napoleon Snowball and Squearel) take up the principle of old major and found a new philosophy called animalism with times they take control / power NAPOLEON represents Stalin Napoleon use violence and military force to consolidate his power and intimidate animals the name Napoleon represents any tyrant in history and tyranny in general Napoleon had betrayed the democratic principal of the french revolution like the pig have betrayed the principal of the animal revolution SNOWBALL is based on Trockij is the one who teaches animals how to read he’s intelligent / passionate / charismatic speaker he believes in the revolution and wants to spread the revolution among the animals of other farms he’s exiled by Napoleon SQUEALER represents propaganda great speaker / he knows how to use words propaga is an essential element in a dictatorship he uses rhetoric to twist the truth and gain political control he knows how to convince people and manipulate the mind of the animals manipulating language BOXER (horse) represents the working class strong / hard worker / loyal and faithful to the idea of the revolution but he’s naive (he’s a bit blind and not very intelligent) he doesn’t see the real intention of the pigs because he’s devoted to the revolution at the end he is sent to the slaughter MOSES (raven) represents the orthodox church instrument to pacify the oppressed he doesn’t really partecipate to the revolution he tells the animals about a sort of paradise where animals will go after death he promises a better life MOLLIE (mare) represents the old russian nobility who was devoted to the Tsar she’s vain / conceited / frivolous she doesn’t partecipate to the revolution and she wants to follow Mr.Jones OLD BENJAMIN (donkey) represents all the intellectuals that fade to denounce and warn people against the dangers of the dictatorship intellectuals that ignored what’s happening wise / cynical / pessimistic he refuses to participate in the revolution he doesn’t believe in revolution but he never opposes he realises form the beginning that revolution won’t change their lives but it doesn’t warn the other animals he understand that pigs are betraying the animals but he doesn’t act SHEEP represents the mass of people who are easily manipulated by the dictators / propaganda they are not seen individually MR FREDERICK represents Hitler he’s the owner of the neighbouring farm Napoleon sign a pact with him but then the pact fails (pact of non-aggression) MR PILKINGTON stands for the west someone have associated him with Churchill In the final the pigs are roasting and playing the cards with the humans the other animals are looking the scene outside the window and they don’t recognise the pigs the pigs begin to drink alcool / smoke / wear clothes / start walking on two legs animals are puzzled and confused only in the end the animals realise that they have been betrayed allusion of the TEHERAN CONFERENCE 1943 Churchill / Roosevelt / Stalin decide how to end the second world war
