Tetto eV n ANIMAL FARM WRITTEN IN 1945 BY GEORGE ORWELL GEORGE ORWELL • George Orwell, pseudonym of Eric Arthur Blair ( 1903- 1950), was a British writer, journalist, essayist, activist and literary critic. • Known during his lifetime as a political and cultural journalist and columnist, as well as a prolific essayist and political-social activist. • His great fame is also due in particular to two novels, written towards the end of his life in the forties: the political allegory of Animal Farm and the dystopia of 1984. PLOT OF THE NOVEL The novel is set on a farm near Willingdon, England, where the animals, tired of the exploitation of their farmer, Mr. Jones, rebel, inspired by the Old Major's speech and led by Palladineve and Napoleon. The revolt succeeds, with Mr. Jones being hunted and the animals renaming the farm as Animal Farm, where they write the Seven Commandments, which enshrine the rules of life for animals and the most important of which is "All animals are equal. ". While Palladineve teaches animals to read and write, Napoleon educates little dogs in the principles of Animalism. Soon, the pigs rise to lead the farm. MAIN CHARACTERS • Old Major: the elderly and wise pig represents both Karl Marx and Lenin, men whose ideals of revolution were genuine and incorruptible. • The Jones factor: represents Tsar Nicholas II, the old and enslaving political class • Napoleon: Stalin hides under the guise of the pig-dictator. • Snowball: represents Lev Trotsky, the opponent with whom Stalin fought over the power left vacant by Lenin. • Clarinet, Squealer in the original version, is Napoleon's propagandist. Speak for half-truths, omissions and outright lies. • Boxer, is a horse whose work is essential for the livelihood of the farm. • Beniamino, a donkey, is a cynic who doubts the sincerity of those around him. • Berta, Clover in the original version, the mare, is the maternal figure of the farm, showing sympathy and kindness. These are the most important and significant characters, there are many others who, however, play a secondary role in the story.
