Mary Shelley dedicated Frankenstein to Godwin and used many of the ideas held by her parents, including social justice and education. Mary was also influenced by Percy Bysshe Shelley, in fact, he and Mary were interested in science and chemistry, so Frankenstein is the first protagonist of the theme of science. The story The Doctor Victor Frankenstein, a Swiss scientist, create a human by joining part selected from corpses. The result of the experiment is ugly and revolting, at the end the monster becomes a murder, and destroys his creator. The form of the novel is epistolary, the story is not told chronologically and is introduced to us by a series of letters written by Walton, a young explorer on a voyage of expedition to the North Pole, to his sister, Margaret Saville. Literary influences Very important is the literary influences in these novel, the monster can be considered Rousseau's natural man, that is, a man in primitive state, not influenced by civilization. Is also important the myth of Prometheus. Prometheus in Greek mythology was a giant who stole fire from the gods in order to give to man. In so doing, he challenged the divine authority and freed men from the god's power. He is clear example of an overreacher, just like Dr Frankenstein. Narrative structure This novel is told by three different narrators and three different points of view: Walton Frankenstein Monster Themes The principal themes of the novel are: The quest for forbidden knowledge The overreacher, in the characters of Walton and Dr Frankenstein The double, between Frankenstein and Walpole and Frankenstein and his creature. The penetration of nature’s secrets The usurpation of female role Social prejudices The creation of the monster The passage is set in one stormy night, in which, after months of labor, Victor completes his creation. But when he brings to life the creature, its awful appearance terrify him. During the sleep, he is troubled by nightmares about Elizabeth and his mother’s corpse.
