THE VICTORIAN AGE (1819-1901) Queen Victoria reigned for 64 years and this period of history is known as “the Victorian Age”. It was a period of stability, peace and prosperity, and she has a sense of duty. But there are some contradiction (Known as “the Victorian compromise”) 1. There was a progress thanks the Industrial Revolution and British empire 2. At the same time there was poverty, injustices, diseases for the working classes. The Victorians were great moralisers. They supported:personal duty,Hard work, Respectability,Church ,Traditional family, Men and women. The values of the Church, family and home were fundamental.philanthropy and charity were important, so libraries, wash houses and swimming baths were built to allow members of working classes to improve themselves. But they were also hypocrites because the bad aspects is society were hidden (for example there were a repression and workhouses) ECONOMY there was a rapid economica growth due to 1. INDUSTRIALISATION (the second Industrial Revolution) textiles, machinery. New transport and communications technologies for example the first underground railway in London and the electric telegraph and steamship 2. BRITISH EMPIRE: expansion of the economy and international trade and raw materials. The UK became the world’s most powerful country. In 1851 a GREAT EXHIBITION of the world’s goods and manufacturers marked the peak of British economic dominance. In this period there was ● a scientific and technological developments ● Increasing power of the middle classes ● Expansion of industry and trade THE LIFE IN THE VICTORIAN TOWN ● between 1891 and 1871 the population of the UK doubled. But more people left the UK for North America in search of a better life. ● In the UK people moved from the countryside to the industrial cities to find work. But there were some problem in the city: ● The urban environment was overcrowded especially for the poor people ● There was a high death rate especially for children ● The working condition was terrible and there was also a work exploitation ● Diseases (epidemics) ● There was a crime WORKHOUSES these places where employment was provided for : poor people, orphans, physically and mentally sick people,the ancien people, unmarried mothers. These people worked as returners for board and lodging. In these places the conditions were terrible. The families were divided and they could meet during meals but they didn’t speak. There was little food. Working hours were long, often 16 hours a day. Children also worked (15 years) in textile mills,mines. REFORMS in this period (1800/ 1870)there were some reforms, such as ● The reform acts = the vote was extended ● The factory act= the children didn’t work for more 48h a week. ● The Poor law amendment Act = for poor people especially workhouses ● Abolition of the corn laws (legge sul mais) ● The sanitary act= to improve the local conditions ● The elementary education act= all children should receive an education.
