Stonehenge: A Prehistoric Monument - Who Built It, When, Why and How, Dispense di Letteratura Inglese

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located on salisbury plain in southern england. It is a large circle of stones, with the most famous being the sarsen and bluestones. The monument has attracted visitors for thousands of years and is believed to have been built in three stages over a period of 800 years, starting around 3100 bc. The exact method of transportation and construction of the stones is unknown, but theories suggest the use of tree rollers, sledges, and primitive apparatus. The purpose of stonehenge is also debated, with theories ranging from a burial ground to a temple, a solar calendar, and a counting device for predicting sunrises and moon cycles.

Stonehenge is located on Salisbury Plain in southern England. Today. what is left ofthe megalith stands in a grassy field in the Wiltshire countryside. Today the monument is surrounded by a fence to prevent damage and conserve this piece of ancient history for others to view Stonehenge is probably the most important prehistorie monument inthe whole of Britain and has attracted visitors fram earliest times. It stands as a timeless monument tothe people who built it The word Stonehenge means “hanging rocks”. It is a large circle of stones. Although not all the stones remain intact, or upright. based on the structure it has been quessedto once have been a full circle of arches When Was it built? The Stonehenge that we see today is the final stage that was completed about 3500 years ago, but first let us look back 5000 years. It is believed that there were three phases to build Stonehenge over a period of 800 years ” 1. The First Stage: The first Stonehenge was a large earthwork or Henge. This structure had a bank enelosing a 300 ft diameter circle, a SO ton heel stone, SE Aubrey holes which formed a circle around the site. It is believed that the heel stone was used as a markerto observe sunrise, all probably built around 3100 BE The Aubrey holes are round pits in the chalk, about one metre wide and deep. with steep sides and flat bottoms. They form a circle about 284 feet in diameter. Excavations have revealed cremated human bones in some of the chalk filling. but the holes themseWes were probably made. not forthe purpose of graves, but as part of the religious ceremony . Shortly after this stage Stonehenge was abandoned, left untouched for over 1000 years 2. The Second Stage: The Arrival of the Bluestones. The second and most dramatie stage of Stonehenge started around 2150 BC. At this time 82 bluestones were added. they had been transported to the site from the Preseli mountains (in south-west Wales). The bluestones are the smallest ofthe two type of rocks used. The entrance, known as Stonehenge avenue appeared during this phase. Possibly. it was formed by the dragging of the stones onto the plain 3. The Third Stage began about 2000 BG and saw the arrival of the Sarsen stones, which were almost certainly brought from the Marlborough Downs near Avebury. in north Wiltshire, about 20 miles north of Stonehenge. The largest of the Sarsen stones transported to Stonehenge weigh SU tonnes and transportation by water
