It’s a comedy because it has some characteristics of the comedy like the attraction between two young lovers, life of street fights, masked balls. But in some points it differs from the conventional comedy because in the end knowledge is not for everybody but only for the protagonists. The time has an important role because less than a minute of hesitation would have saved the lives of Romeo and Juliet. It’s a tragedy because the protagonists fight against eternal forces that make their relationship difficult and unlike the great tragic heroes, they experience no inner struggle. In Verona there was a quarrel between the family of Montague and Capulet First act: Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin, was in love with Rosaline and after learning that she will be at a party at the Capulets’ house that evening, he persuades Romeo to go with him. Here he meets Juliet and they fall in love at first sight but discover that their families are enemies Second act: Romeo overhears Juliet express her love for him and they decide to marry. In fact this act ends with their secret wedding in the chapel of a friend, Friar Laurence, who hoped their marriage may and the families’ quarrel. Third act: this is the longest act and it can be divided in two parts: that of private events and that of public events, full of action and movement. Mercutio, Romeo’s friend, is killed by Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin during a street fight. So Romeo in revenge kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona. Fourth act: Juliet takes a drug given to her by Friar Laurence that makes her appear to be dead to avoid the marriage with Count Paris arranged by her father. Romeo hears that Juliet is dead and decides to return to Verona. Fifth act: Romeo takes some poison and dies kissing Juliet. When she wakes up and sees Romeo dead, stabs herself with a dagger. Unlike the most Shakespearean heroes, Romeo and Juliet will never know the truth about their deaths
