JAMES JOYCE ORDINARY DUBLIN - Though he went into voluntary exile at the age of 22, he set all his works in Ireland and mostly in the city of Dublin. His effort was to give a realistic portrait of the life of ordinary people doing ordinary things and living ordinary lives. THE REBELLION AGAINST THE CHURCH - Joycewas well trained by the Jesuits but he challenged Catholicism. His hostility towards the church was the revolt of the artist-heretic against the official doctrine. But the conflict was even more painful between a son and his parents linked to the quest for his artistic potentialities. A SUBJECTIVE PERCEPTION OF TIME - His themes are reworked in such a way as to become gradually less relevant than the “narrative” itself. Facts become confused, they are always explored from different points of view simultaneously and are represented as “clues” not through the voice of the omniscient narrator. - His stories and novels open in medias res with the analysis of a particular moment and the portrait of the characters is based on introspection rather than on description. Time is perceived as subjective, leading to a psychological change. THE IMPERSONALITY OF THE ARTIST - Hewas influenced by Flaubert and Baudelaire for what concerns the impersonality of the artist. (as Eliot did). The artist's task was to render life objectively in order to give back to the readers a true image of it. This necessarily led to isolation and detachment of the artist from society. His style, technique and language developed from the realism and disciplined prose of Dubliners, through an exploration of the characters’ impressions and points of view, through the use of free direct speech and the epiphany to the interior monologue with two levels of narration, a device used to give a realistic framework to the characters’ formless thoughts up to the extreme interior monologue. So language broke down into a succession of words without punctuation or grammar connections into infinite puns, and reality became a place of psychological projections of symbolical archetypes and cultural knowledge. DUBLINERS - USE OF EPIPHANY - The description in each story is realistic and extremely concise with abundance of external details. - The use of realism is mixed with symbolism, its function is to take the reader beyond the usual aspects of life, a peculiar technique to reach this purpose is EPIPHANY “the sudden spiritual manifestation” caused by a trivial gesture, an external object or a banal situation, which used to lead the character to a sudden self-realization about him/herself or about the reality surrounding him/her. PARALYSIS - It's both physical and moral. Joyce's characters either accept their condition because they are not aware of it or because they lack the courage to break the chains that bind them.
