ULYSSES, JAMES JOYCE Leopold Bloom, is Joyce's Common Man, a parody ofthe wandering Odysseus and an embodiment ofthe wandering Jew. He leaves his home at eight o'clock on a Thursday morning inJune to buy his breakfast and returnsfinally at two o'clock thefollowing morning. In the hours in-between, he lands on the shores of many streets, endures misadventures and delight, recalls the unfaithfulness ofhis wye and the death of his little son, tastes gall and honey, as Homer's hero did, and he reaches the "sanctuary" ofhis "Ithaca" where his wife, Molly, an ironically unfaithful Penelope, gives rein to theflow of her thoughts and reveries, in a long monologue which closes the novel. During his wanderings, Bloom meets a contemporary version of Telemachus, Stephen Dedalus, who is the alienated protagonist ofA Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, and who becomes, momentarily, his adopted son: the alienated common man rescues the alienated artist, helplessly inebriated, from a brothel, and takes him home where the Paralysis of their fatigue Prevents them from achieving a Personal communion. There can be no direct relationship between the artist and the common man, but they exist in mutual need: the artist's aim is to raise the common manfrom ephemeral life to Permanenæ, and the common man exists as the artist's inexhaustible material. Focus on the text: Published in 1922, Ulysses represents a high point of Modernism. It tells the story of a day in the life of advertising salesman Leopold Bloom, who gets up, walks around Dublin, meeting various people along the way, including the indigent writer Stephen Dedalus with whom he visits a brothel and gets drunk, before finally going home and laying beside his wife Molly. Ulysses of Joyce - The Odyssey of Homer (the major source) Odysseus-Leopold Bloom: The Greek soldier and hero whose ship, returning from the Trojan wars, is blown off course. He finds himself delayed by a series of bizarre and perilous events, which he survives by using all his wits, and manages to return to his home of Ithaca. Leopold is a middle aged Jewish advertising agent who leaving his wife asleep in bed, goes wandering around Dublin. Telemachus-Stephen Dedalus: Telemachus is the son of Ulysses. He is forced to share his home with his mother's suitors who treat him badly and deny him his rights. Stephen is an indigent writer, forced to wander the streets of Dublin in search of a new home, and a substitute father. He meets Bloom who offers to take him into his home.
