II Movimento Moderno è stato spesso indicato anche con altri termini a seconda del periodo e del luogo di riferimento: - Purismo (Francia anni '10 e ‘20) - Razionalismo (Italia anni '20 e ‘30) - International Style (USA anni '40 e ‘50) - Funzionalismo (Italia ‘50 e ‘60) CASA KAUFMANN Dal nome del suo proprietario è una villa progettata e realizzata sul ruscello Bear Run nei pressi di Mill Run in Pennsylvania tra il 1936 e il 1939 dall'architetto Frank Lloyd Wright. Attualmente casa Kaufmann Wright è diventata un museo meta di turisti da ogni parte del mondo e il Western Pennsylvania Conservancy propone diversi tipi di tour per visitarlo. L'edificio si estende su due piani, il primo è caratterizzato da un enorme soggiorno che grazie alle molteplici vetrate, riesce a fondere l'ambiente esterno a quello interno. Il tutto fu studiato per far sì che i suoni naturali fossero udibili. Nel piano superiore si trovano le camere da letto, che sono abbastanza piccole, con lo scopo di invogliare gli abitanti della casa ad utilizzare il soggiorno, favorendo così la socialità negli spazi aperti. Il nucleo centrale della casa è il focolare costruito proprio su uno sperone roccioso naturale, da cui si diramano più terrazze che vanno a riprendere la forma discontinua del terreno che consente all'acqua di creare una cascata. Come è stata progettata la Casa sulla Cascata? Frank Lloyd Wright realizzò la casa sulla cascata in pianta libera e con la stessa pavimentazione sia all’interno che all’esterno, per enfatizzare l’unione tra la casa e l’ambiente circostante. l'architetto oltre a materiali come cemento armato e ferro, utilizzò anche la pietra e il legno per creare un'intersezione perfetta con l'ambiente. Per questi motivi, la casa sulla cascata è considerata da molti, una delle più celebri architetture contemporanee che utilizzando gli elementi dell'architettura organica, riesce a mettere in contatto l'uomo con la natura. Anche gli esterni richiamano la natura circostante. Wright fece utilizzare solo due colori per l’esterno, ocra e rosso, anche se la sua prima idea era quella di rivestire la struttura in foglia d’oro. Caratteristiche: - Architettura che ha lo scopo di rendere funzionali ed essenziali le costruzioni architettoniche - Massimo esponente è Le Corbusier - Utilizza materiali industriali - Architettura di impatto sociale e politico - Eliminazione di elementi superflui come le decorazioni - Equilibrio tra misura e proporzione ARCHITETTURA RAZIONALISTA Nell’architettura razionalista si usa prevalentemente il cemento armato. Il sistema costruttivo progettato da Le Corbusier è detto “Le Domino”, con strutture più esili ed essenziali in cemento armato dove le pareti non sono più portanti e dove possono esserci quindi grandi finestre e aperture. I piani sono in cemento armato (plinti), alleggeriti dal laterizio e con pilastri posti sui lati della struttura. La tecnologia del cemento armato offre la possibilità all’architetto di avere carta bianca e di interpretare l’interno come vuole (open spaces).
