CASTAWAY Two people from the Marshall Islands saw a boat washed up on the beach where there was a man who said he had been drifting for 16 months departed from Mexico. He left Mexico for El Salvador in 2012, but the boat had problems. His companion had died at sea several months before. Ola Fjeldstad, a Norwegian anthropology student said that the man’s condition isn’t good, his name was José Ivan and he survived by catching turtles and birds with his hands. The islanders who found the man took him to a nearby island to meet the mayor, Ione De Brum. He contacted the ministry of foreign affairs who said that they’re expected José to be taken to the capital. Fjelstad explained that the man stayed at a local council house and after a check-up they found him low pressure, but his conditions were good. Fraser Christian, who teaches maritime survival courses, said that the man’s story, if true, isn’t unique. It’s possible to catch turtles or small fish by hand and he advice to start to eat their eyes because there is lots of fluid and then move on to the blood. The major dangers castaways experience are exposure and dehydration. Individual physiology is important, there are some people more able to survive than others. In 2006 three Mexicans were discovered drifting near the Marshall islands. They said they had survived for nine months at sea on a diet of rainwater, raw fish and seabirds. Cliff Dowing, who teaches sea survival to sailor was skeptical. Other castaways stories: -Poon Lim, a Chinese sailor survived in 1942 for 133 days in wooden raft. -in 1971, Scottish sailor Dougal Robertson and his family survived 38 days on a lifeboat after a killer whales attack. -in 2011 two fishermen drifted for 33 days. -a Panamnian fisherman sued Pricness Cruises in 2012 because they ignored his cries for help. He survived 28 days adrift but his friends both died of thirst.
