MACBETH A C T 4 S C E N E 1 O N E O F T H E M O S T I M P O R T A N T T R A G E D Y B Y W I L L I A M S H A K E S P E A R E M A R G H E R I T A L A U R O G I A N M A R C O C O L I E T T O R E S T O R A C E CHARACTERS: Macbeth, the protagonist of the tragedy is the example of the tragic hero. At the beginning he is loyal, onest and he fights for his value like Beowulf but near to the end he becames wicked, and a villain man. Lennox, is a young Scottish noble, a Thane attending on Duncan. First witch Second Witch Third witch The three witches symbolize the supernatural elements and the black magic like the one of Sycorax, Caliban and Faustus. They are negative characters, they just predict some events without any explanation. They are strong and they represent the power of evil. Hecate, is the goddess of withcraft, we see her as the ruler of the three witches. ANALYSIS: This scene has two important parts. The first is the witches’ elaborate rituals and the ingredients that they put in their mixture (body parts and entrails of animals). This indicates the creation of a monster, and also it says that the man (Macbeth) and the monster will meet each other. In other words, Macbeth is no longer human, but a future monster. Obviously we mean the bad person he will become. The second part is Macbeth’s encounter with the witches. The witches offer Macbeth three prophecies, and Macbeth knows what his destiny holds for him. Here the audience can reflect about the rule of the witches, if they are independent agents or if they are agents of fate that shows the truth. Perhaps their prophecies are made to bring confusion to the minds of the people that know the prophecies infact Macbeth was loyal to Duncan, and he didn’ have the idea of killing him if he hadn’t met the witches. Also Macbeth’s decision to kill Macduff’s family to be the only possible king is an important development. We can say an important psycological development because during the story, the protagonist changes his ideas thanks to the words of the witches but also of his wife Lady Macbeth. Fire burn and cauldron bubble.” Here the witches are building suspense. “Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf” Here the witches are saing all the ingredients for their mixture. “I don’t know how you know the things you do, but I insist you answer my questions…tell me what I want to know.” Here Macbeth speaks with the witches in a very arrogant mood: he believes he is in control of the witches and so makes requests to them. “Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff. Beware the thane of Fife. Let me go. Enough.” Here there is the first apparition giving Macbeth a prophecy. “He will not be commanded by you. Here’s another. stronger than the first.” The first witch tells Macbeth he cannot control the witches.
