Australian weather and seasons – a variety of climates Australia is a continent that experiences a variety of climates due to its size. The temperature can range from below zero in the Snowy Mountains in southern Australia to extreme heat in the Kimberley region in the north-west of the continent. In the continent, there are six climatic zones. 1. Equatorial – the tip of Cape York and Melville Islands north of Darwin. There is no dry season. All months have lots of precipitation. 2. Tropical – across northern Australia region. There are often only two seasons: a wet season and a dry season. 3. Sub-tropical – near the east coasts. The climate is similar to the Mediterranean climate. 4. Desert – arid and semiarid areas of the centre of the continent 5. Grasslands (or savanna) –the arid and semi-arid desert areas in the centre. The climate is hot with few precipitations 6. The Temperate zone occupies Victoria, Tasmania, the south-eastern corner of South Australia. The seasons are described in terms of European seasons applied to the southern hemisphere. Acacia are found in the coastal zones and dry inlands Eucalyptus In Australia there are only 12 species of eucalyptus. Eucalyptus are found in rain forest Melaleuca Melaleuca is a genus of around 170 species. is situatedin eastern Australia. Some of the most important Australian animals Australia doesn’t have large predatory animals, the dingo, or wild dog, is largest carnivorous mammal. Other carnivorous animals include the Numbat, Quoll and Tasmanian Devil, but none of these are larger than the size of cat. Dingoes are found all across Australia, except for Tasmania.
