Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) LIFE: ▪ She spent her life in her father’s house in Massachusetts ▪ She had an interest in SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES in fact she was called “SCEPTICAL MYSTIC” ▪ In 1850 she started writing serious poems thanks to Benjamin Newton ( who moved to another part of the country where he got married and then died -> FIRST LOSS FOR EMILY ) ▪ In 1858 she met Reverend Charles Wadsworth who became her friend (in 1860 he moved to another country -> SECOND LOSS FOR EMILY ) ▪ In 1862 she sent 4 of her poems to Thomas Higginson who advised her not to write anymore -> that’s why she will never publish her poems ▪ From 1862 she started writing a lot ▪ From 1865, after a few weeks in hospital, she decided to live forever in her room at the second floor of her father’s house wearing a white dress SYMBOLS : ● WHITE DRESS -> for 56 years ● ISOLATION -> search of the absolute isolated ● LITTLE ROOM -> thanks to it she becomes a great poet ● “INFINITY MAY EXIST IN A LITTLE ROOM WHEN IMAGINATION IS USED TO COMPRESS, RATHER THAN EXPAND, THOUGHT AND FEELING INTO WORDS” ● She lived in a WORLD OF HER OWN where things were never like they seemed ● FEELINGS -> sublimated by LOVE LANGUAGE AND STYLE: ● SHORT LYRICS -> short quatrains rhyming ABAB or XBXB ( she uses imperfect rhymes involving assonance ) ● COMPRESSION -> she leaves out verbs and connecting words ● PRONOUNS -> it is not always clear what they refer to
