Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) LIFE​: ▪ She spent her life in her ​father’s house​ in ​Massachusetts ▪ She had an ​interest​ in​ SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES​ in fact she was called “​SCEPTICAL MYSTIC​” ▪ In ​1850​ she started writing serious poems thanks to ​Benjamin Newton​ ( who moved to another part of the country where he got married and then died ->​ FIRST LOSS FOR EMILY ​) ▪ In ​1858​ she met ​Reverend Charles Wadsworth​ who became her friend (in 1860 he moved to another country -> ​SECOND LOSS FOR EMILY​ ) ▪ In ​1862​ she sent 4 of her poems to ​Thomas Higginson ​who advised her not to write anymore -> that’s​ why​ she will​ never publish her poems ▪ From ​1862​ she started writing a lot ▪ From ​1865​, after a few weeks in hospital, she decided to ​live forever​ ​in her room at the second floor of her father’s house wearing a ​white dress SYMBOLS ​: ● WHITE DRESS​ -> for 56 years ● ISOLATION​ -> search of the ​absolute​ isolated ● LITTLE ROOM​ -> thanks to it she becomes a great poet ● “INFINITY MAY EXIST IN A LITTLE ROOM WHEN IMAGINATION IS USED TO COMPRESS, RATHER THAN EXPAND, THOUGHT AND FEELING INTO WORDS” ● She lived in a ​WORLD OF HER OWN​ where things were never like they seemed ● FEELINGS ​-> sublimated by​ LOVE LANGUAGE AND STYLE​: ● SHORT LYRICS​ -> short quatrains rhyming ​ABAB​ or ​XBXB ​( she uses ​imperfect rhymes involving ​assonance​ ) ● COMPRESSION​ -> she leaves​ out verbs​ and ​connecting words ● PRONOUNS ​-> it is not always clear what they refer to
