OLIVER TWIST BY CHARLES DICKENS CHILDHOOD IN THE VICTORIAN AGE Childhood in Victorian times was a cruel experience. A lot of poor children had to work in factories, mines or as domestic servants and chimney sweepers. Others became criminals. Victorian literature was really interested in childhood. Dickens himself was obsessed with children who considered innocent or corrupted by adults. It was thought that workhouses needed to be built because poor people were lazy and that the terrible conditions in the workhouse would inspire them to improve their own conditions. Anyway, instead of reducing the suffering of the poor, the people who managed workhouses abused their rights and caused them further misery.
