When we go to another country and we don’t know the local language, we speak in English. The article talks about the use of English at the European Parliament: the General Secretary said that it’s important for politicians to speak more slowly and in their native language, because in this way the quality of interpretations is better. The parliament’s annual budget for interpreters in $50 million, there are 24 official languages and 330 interpreters, so why not speak your language? I agree with the article because every european citizen has the right to became a member of the parliament, so some may not have a high level of fluency in English, therefore expressing an idea in a foreign language can be more difficult. Certain smells take you back to your childhood The article talks about smells and how they can make you nostalgic and they can evoke memories of our childhood. In fact there is an area of the brain that is delegate to memorise smells for long time. So, when we smell something, it could evoke memories of years and years ago. For example when I walk near the bakery, I remember when my grandmother bought me chocolate rolls before school. The odours can be positive or negative: it depends on the personal association with the emotion that they arouded. When I smell watermelon, in fact, I think of the sea and summer, while when I smell cauliflower I think of an elderly aunt that scared me. Aromatherapists partly depend on this for their patients, moreover smells can even encourage us to buy things, in fact many stores introduce fragrances to shoppers to evoke nostalgic memories, that induce us to buy something even if it isn’t useful. Plants can make intelligent decisions The article talks about how plants can make decisions to survive also in unfavorable conditions. Researchers, in fact, say that even if plants don’t have a brain, they can make intelligent decisions regarding risks. In particular scientists grew several pea plants that had their roots separated in two pots, each one contained differentamount of nutrients. In this way they discovered that the plants diverted their roots to the pot with the most nutrients. Obviusly plants aren’t intelligent in the human sense, but they echibit complex behaviours to efficently take advantage of natural opportunities. I agree with the article because I studied that during the evolution plants have developed thorns to avoid being eaten by animals. Moreover there are plants that can survive in extreme conditions like deserts or glaciers and plants that adopt defensive strategies to survive like pine resin that prevent sap from freezing. Slim people’s genes help them stay slim The article talks about weight problems. A research published in the journal PLOS Genetics, suggests that thin people had DNA that contained a lower burden of genes that increased their chances of being overweight. So these genes, that play at least 40%of a role in people’s weight, help them to stay slim. Obesity is a problem that affects over 30 % of American adults and so many people on the South Pacific island of Nauru, so the study has been undertaken to find out why some people are naturally slim while others struggle with their weight. So be overweight dosen’t depend on how much you eat, but it’s influenced by your genes. I agree with the article and in particular with the professor of metabolism and medicine who says that it’s easy to rush to judgment and criticize people for their weight, but science shows that staying slim doesn’t depend on a particular diet. Babies of older fathers may be less healthy The article talks about babies of older fathers. Nowadays more and more fathers are over 45, specially VIPs. For example Richard Gere was 68 when he become father. Also Mick Jagger is an old father: he was 73, when his 8th child was born. I think that this depends on the fact that women study for more time, so they think to have a family later. The article shows a study from Stanford University in the USA. Scientists studied data on over 40 million birth and discoveed that babies born to fathers over the age of 45 were at grater risk of being born with health problems and weren’t as healthy as those conceived by younger fathers. One scientist said a lot more detailed research was needed to prove that older fathers conceive less healthy babies and that for an individual the risk not change much. If fathers conceive later, besides babies, mothers might be at risk of miscarriage. Singing in gruop could make you happier The article talks about singing in a group. A research from the UK, shows that singing as part of a group can be positive for us and in particular for those of us with mental problems. The study was conducted weekly with a community singing group for six months and it was free. Tom Shakespeare, the leader of the research, said that all of the partecipants achieve positive effects from the workshops on their mental health. So, according to the article, singing in group could make you happier and fun and increase your confidence, social skills and mood. If it’s true, I think that we should all sing in group every day. In my opinion, singing in group also increase social relationship and motivation. Exercise is contagious becauseof social media The article talks about exercise related to social media and the effect that running with other friends could have. In fact a research shows that people who post personale exercise data via social media, can encourage people to be more active, to do more exercise and also to be more competitive. In this way social media inproved the performance of people who are less in shape. Moreover running with a friend can inspire you to exercise harder, trying to overtake his performance. So if you run more, you inspire your friend to run more! I agree with the article because I think that exercising with friends is funner and more exciting than doing it yourself. Thus physical activity also becomes an important moment of socialization. Besides posting photos of our efforts and receiving likes and comments makes us feel good and appreciated. This is a reward for many people! Sad movies help reduce pain The aricle says that sad movies could hepl us to reduce pain. In fact when we watch a drama our brain release endorphins, that are natural painkillers, so they make us feel good after a physical or psychological pain. The study was conducted in two groups: one group watched a sad movie, while another group watched a documentary. The results showed that the pain tolerance of those who watched the sad movie was increased, while the pain tolerance of those who watched the documentary was decreased. According to the article we like watching sad movies because of the natural high from endorpins. Sleeping with a fan can be bad for us The article is about fans. Some sleep experts say that sleeping with a fan can be bad for us, because it can cause dust and pollen to circulate around the room, so it could be detrimental for those of us with atshma or hay fever. Moreover fans can dry out and irritate your eyes, mouth and sinusies and make muscles tense up and cramp. On the other side, a group of specialists say there aren’t risks from using a fan it is kept at a safe distance from our bed. They also recomended an air filter in the bedroom to reduce the level of dust. According to the article it is better to sleep with a fan rather than using an air conditioner, that can cause us to wake up with a cold or a fever. Although I agree with the article,I prefer to sleep with the air conditioner, because it cools the room faster. New store lets you shop, wlak out and pay later The article talks about Amazon Go: it’s a new kind of store with no checkout required. Amazon describes ita s the world’s most afvanced shopping technology because of you never have to wait in line.the technology works via an app, that automatically detect when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. A little later Amazon send you a receipt andcharge your account. So there is no waiting in line, no cashiers, and no being held up by slow costumers, credit card transictions or waiting for change. Amazon in confidenti t can charge peopl’s shopping habits. An indusrty analyst suggested Amazon Go could challenge Internet shopping. I think it’s tue because it’s faster and you can see what you’re buying. So I can’t wait for it to arrive in Italy!
