He taught in a College of Oxford University and he was linked with the royal court. In his life he criticized the corruption of the Church and its wealth. The most powerful barons of the time brought him to London, where he preached in support of a campaign to increase the value of the crown by obtaining more money from the Church. During his life he was also consulted by the king and the parliament to decide whether or not was lawful taking all the treasures of the kingdom back from Rom, and he said it was. He is considered the first English major heretic because of his ideas who included an attack to the pope authority. All his writings where condemned by the pope but he was protected by his patrons. He could so retire pacifically and die at home. He translated the Bible from Latin to English, so the common language, and his translations where very important to the developing of the culture and they had a wider circulation than any other English writings. During his period there was a debate about English was suitable to express God’s words. His followers, called Lollards, thought that English was suitable and even better than Latin. He hoped that the translation of the Bible world encouraged people to led an autonomous religious life. The combination of the Heresy and the translation of the Bible was explosive, also because Wycliffe was suspected to be linked with the Peasant’s revolt, and the translation of it became forbidden without the permission of the Church. A great follower of Wycliffe was Geoffrey Chaucer who also witnessed the Peasant’s revolt and criticized too the corruption of the Church. The Parson, one of the characters of his masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, is described as a priest that Wycliffe would have approved.
