Brexit is the name given to the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. It is a combination of “Britain” and “exit”. On 23 June 2016, the UK held a referendum on its membership of the EU; 51.89% of voters voted to leave the EU. The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020. Security Remain • A union better equips Britain to tackle threats to security (like terrorism and cross- border crime). Leave • Britain’s domestic security could benefit from full border controls which it would hope to gain outside the EU. Trade Remain • Access to the EU market is invaluable in terms of commercial value and facilitates the exchange of goods, services between Member States. Leave • Membership of the EU keeps Britain from fully capitalising on trade with other major economies such as Japan, India and the US. Business Remain • Free trade within the EU reduces barriers and enables companies to grow. Leave • The EU subjects Britain to slow and inflexible bureaucratic red tape, making it more prohibitive for smaller companies to do business.
