Lezione 19.12.20 Bronté sisters used to write for example with the Male subdonim Carol Bell. There are some differences between novels written by female writers and novel written by male writers because the male novelists see things differently especially in Dickens novels women are compared to objects. Frankenstein or the modern Prometheus is the complete title of Mary shelley's novel (prometeo ha rubato il fuoco sacro agli dei e l'ha dato all'umanità così dottor Frankenstein ha rubato il segreto della vita immortale in un certo senso a dio e lo ha donato all'umanità andando a creare questa creatura che proprio non era pensata ad esistere proprio perché l'immortalità è qualcosa che è trascendentale e non appartiene agli uomini secondo una concezione epistemologica del tempo) It takes us back to the mythical figure of Prometheus who is said to have formed the clay image of men and women and by stealing fire from the gods animated them. You can imagine that the complete title of the novel Frankenstein or the modern Prometheus is complicated because there are two versions of the myth of Prometheus: - one version is that he stole fire from the gods for the benefits of mankind and this is the Aeschylus version - -Prometheus was the creator who created the first human out of clay and animated it with life and this is the obvious version Prometheus is punished by Zeus, he is also changed to a rock and he is continuously tortured for his daring crime. Mary Shelley uses both the versions because the ambitious doctor Victor Frankenstein goes much beyond and he displays the world as exclusively played by God. Prometheus Bound -Rubens (1577-1640) this is a representation of Prometheus bound when he is tortured for his crime and this is why we call the novel Frankenstein or the modern Prometheus. We know that in the novel the monster, not Victor Frankenstein, uses to read a copy by John Milton's Paradise Lost and this is unusual because the monster is a weird creature but he's not so bad as we can read about him at the end of the plot and he's also a sort of intellectual creature because he used to read John Milton's Paradise Lost. Mary S. links Paradise Lost with Frankenstein because of the act of creating men through clay and she used also the myth of the Expulsion from Adam and Eve. Gothic settings: Gloomy mansions, castels with ghosts 1 Narrator : Robert Walton She uses the explorations in order to create the spaces and places of her book, she even uses scientific discoveries (like electricity) to create the monster. La paura della società borghese viene racchiusa in nomi di mostri e dice che quella di Frankenstein e quella di Dracula sono vite parallele sono figure indivisibili Perché diventano i due volti orribili
