RUPERT BROOKE He was born in Warwickshire in 1887, he studied in Cambridge where he began to write most of his poems, which were characterized by the idyllic vision of the English countryside. Later he began to travel, he began to publish other works: ➔ “Georgian poetry” first collection of poems (he belonged to a group of writers called Georgian poets) *This group of writers rejected the Victorian poetry’ style and dealt with humble life and melancholic themes. ➔ “1914 & other Poems” sonnet collection (the most famous), in this one he talked about the idealistic tribute to the war. He died in 1915 (due to blood poisoning) in a Greek hospital. Winston Churchill will write a work for his death called "The Times". PATRIOTISM AND WAR Brooke had never experienced the long war due to premature death, so he had only seen one aspect that he expressed as a purification of war, without ever having dealt with the terrible aspects of it. For this reason, for Brooke, the experience of the soldiers was seen as a sacrifice for the nation and exalted its patriotism and heroism. THE SOLDIER (1915) The poet tells the reader that if one day he dies in a foreign country, that body will make that land a better place. The poet loves his country for its beautiful landscapes full of flowers, rivers and roads where men can live in close contact with nature. In the second part, however, he conveys the very sense of patriotism, saying that dying in war is a way to show gratitude to the mother country. The poet's soul will then be purified with death and it will return to England. WYSTAN HUGH AUDEN Auden was born in York and studied in Oxford where he became interested in English verse. He traveled a lot, also participated in the Spanish Civil War and finally settled in the United States of America where from a lover of socialism (when he was in England) he became interested in Christianity and Protestantism (when he went to the USA). He is considered the best poet of the 20th century and wrote many works: ❖ The Rake’s progress (a libretto) ❖ Another Time, The double man, Nones and The shield of Achilles (verse collection) ❖ Homage to Clio (humorous work) He was part of a group of progressive poets (also called "poets of the thirties") who exhibited a strong dissatisfaction with post-war life (a strong pessimism). His political view was oriented towards the left or even the Marxists and believed that the poet should have an active role in society in general. Only after he went to America, his poetry began to focus on universal themes such as subjectivity, loneliness and emotions. He was greatly influenced by modernism, but he cannot be considered one of them.
