Your class has watched a television documentary about the benefits of helping immigrants to integrate into their local communities. You have made the notes below: -language -work -culture Some opinions expressed in the documentary: “Immigrants should pass a language exam before being allowed to live in the country” “Local culture is enriched by the diversity immigrants bring” “We learn new ways of doing things by working alongside people from other backgrounds” Write an essay discussing two of the areas in your notes. You should explain why the areas are important and provide reasons in support of your answer. It is certainly true that the phenomenon of immigration is constantly increasing all over the world. It is proved by the amount of foreigners who we can meet among our streets on a daily basis. However, the question is how integration can be beneficial for the local communities. Undoubtedly, the arrival of people from abroad has caused changes in the local culture, but we must benefit from them. In fact, getting in touch with several traditions will not destroy our ones, as many people argue, but it will allows us to be more open-minded and to keep pace with the modern globalised world. Therefore, I am broadly in agreement with the point made in the documentary that local culture is enriched by the diversity immigrants bring. To offer an example, plates from other states, such as sushi or pizza, have widely spread across the world and it could only have happened as a result of immigration. Moreover, immigration has brought about the creation of an international official language. This explains its impact on our lives with the result of bringing people together. During the documentary, it was suggested that immigrants should pass a language exam before being allowed to live in a country but I strongly disagree with this point as I believe that a language can be totally learnt only during the stay. Consequently, foreigners will be closer to the local community which will help them with everyday lessons, for example. For this reason, I reckon that immigration can only have bright sides since it is the key to broading our horizons to a different lifestyle. 267 WORDS
