INGLESE PERFEZIONAMENTO 4 CAPITOLO 4 Managing across cultures Managing a global multinational company is often difficult, because in many cases local differences such as different habits, beliefs and principle can make this impossible. The conflict between globalization and localization can be defined by the word ‘glocalization’. Companies that want to be successful in foreign markets (=mercati esteri) have to consider the characteristics of the local culture. Richard Lewis has classified 3 types of different cultures which represent 3 different types of behaviour (=comportamento): 1. The first group is composed by business people in linear active cultures such as Great Britain, the United States and Germany. They are organized, they do one thing at a time and plan in advance. They respect the rules and they are individualist. 2. The second group is composed by multi-active cultures such as Latin American, Africa, Italy, Spain, and Greece. They are more attached to feelings, emotions, relationships and connections. They do many things at the same time in fact they are flexible and happy to improvise. They respect status and are collectivist. They give more importance to relationships and friendship instead of rules and regulations. 3. The third group is composed by reactive cultures such as China, Vietnam, and Japan. In general, they stay away from confrontation and don’t want to become less respected. They often avoid eye contact.
