Charles Dickens Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in Portsmouth, where his father was a clerk. Dickens’s family moved to London, where his father was imprisoned for debt and so Charles had to quit school. He was sent to work in a blacking factory: it was a very traumatic experience which marked him and his literary production for life. After his father’s financial position improved, Charles went back to school. After school became first a parliamentary reporter and then a journalist. In 1832 he began to work as a newspaper reporter. In 1836 he married Catherine Hogarth and after he divorced. In 1870 he died and he was buried at West minister Abbey. Oliver Twist Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse: his mother dies just after his birth and he lives nine years in a house for orphans; after that, he was transferred to a workhouse for adults, where Mr. Bumble offers 5 pound to anyone who will take the boy away from workhouse. Oliver manages to escape and becomes an apprentice to a chimney sweep and ends up working for an undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry: Oliver fights against the undertaker’s other apprentice, Mr. Sowerberry is furious and the boy runs away, heading for London.
