The Victorian Age The Victorian era was the reign of Queen Victoria, from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901. During this period England dominates world politics. Britain used military force to colonize other nations, thanks to imperialism Queen Victoria Built the greatest empire in the history of the world, it was composed of over 50 colonies. Negative factors  factory workers spent 16 hours days working in dangerous conditions. Also, children were forced to work in cotton mill and coal mines. Reform  in 1833 slavery was abolished. The first laws restricting child labour were passed, housing was improved, public schools were developed and voting rights were extended. Charles Dickens Life: He received a short formal education and had a difficult childhood. He began his career in 1833, he was an English novelist, journalist, short story writer and social critic. He created some of literature's best-known fictional characters, and is considered one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era. Style: Dickens plots are adventurous. He published in serial publication. The tone of his work was grotesque and humorous. Themes: The principals’ themes were the conditions of life of the poor. He talked about exploitation of children, cruelty of the workhouses, the problems of the industrial revolution and social criticism. The main warks of Dickens are: Oliver Twist, Hard Times and Black House.
