CHARLES DICKENS He was born in Portsmouth at the age of 12 the Dickens went to London but after a short time his father went to prison for debts and the deacons had that word in a factory of shoepolish and he put labels on bottles. the experience was traumatic but also positive because in is novels he always remembered the friendship, the poor areas in London and his friend. At 14 he worked in a legal office as a clerk and the theme of law will be a very important topic in some of his novels. Later he became a journalist, he wrote a series of articles about London life using the pen name Boz, collected and published in instalments with the title Sketches by Boz. His first novel was ‘’The Pickwick Papers’’, It was set in provincial England before industrial revolution, it dealt with a group of people travelling England in which he put in evidence 2 aspects of his style: comic and picaresque. After he went to America, to Italy and to France for a series of lectures, when he come to England, he wrote 20 novels in 20 years. He died by a stroke: a serious illness by which the blood is blocked in brain. DICKENS NOVELS 1)Social novels: He talked about total problems, the most important example was '’Oliver Twist’’, ‘’Hard times’’ and ‘’Martin Chuzzlewit’’ . He criticised the Victorian society but offended middle and upper classes 2) Novels organised around a theme: the theme were money and law. The best examples of this type of novels were: ‘’A Christmas Card’’, ‘’Dombey and son’’ and ‘’Bleak house’’ 3) Novels of formation: the best example was ‘’David Copperfield’’. SETTINGS Dickens used a variety from provincial England to industrial towns in north England to London which was the main setting. CHARACTERS Dickens created a wide range of characters but middle classes and lower classes where much described. His characters are divided into 2 categories: bad and good. PLOTS They were very long and often they had subplots. STYLE Dickens is compared to Shakespeare considered a master of English language because he invented lots of words which are still present in modern English. His style was a combination of realism, comic, pathetic, irony and humour. His aim was to arouse the readers interest by exaggerating characters habits. OLIVER TWIST It is a social novel because he dealt with the social problems like the suffering of the poor but he gave a personal perspective to the issue. he tackled the problems raised by the poor law and workhouses. This novel had another title:’’ A Parish boy’s progress’’. The protagonist is an orphan,
