CHARLOTTE BRONTE Charlotte was born in 1816, she was the third of six children. Her father was the reverend Patrick Prunty and her mother was called Maria. She died when Charlotte was young. Her parents had Celtic origin, so she grown with fantastic story-telling and a belief in feelings over reason. In 1820 they settled in a small village on the wild and desolate Yorkshire moors. The father often talks about poetry and history with his children. He read them family compositions. The children's imagination were stimulated by nature too. Charlotte and her sisters were sent to Cowan Bridge School, where they had to endure harsh living conditions. Then Charlotte, Emily and Anne were sent to another, more humane school. Charlotte entered to the teaching staff. She finished school in Brussels. She had an unrequited passion for her married professor. She returned to England and she published a poem, which sold only two copies. In 1847 the sisters works had success. They published three novels: ''Jane Eyre'' by Charlotte, ''Wuthering Heights'' by Emily and ''Agnes Grey'' by Anne. Emily died in 1848, while Anne died in 1849. Charlotte was the strongest of the sisters. She married her father's curate, Arthur Bell Nichols, and published two works. She died in childbirth in 1855. ''JANE EYRE'' It was Charlotte's first novel and her best-known work. It is a sort of autobiography. The protagonist is an heroine that shows a courage and a determination that contrast with Victorian ideals of female. Charlotte's passionate women are ready to sacrifice their love to their honour and duty. For example, at the end of the novel Jane goes back to Rochester only when she feels strong and ready enough to do so. The novel had a combination of realistic observation, fine humor and intensity of feeling. Jane Eyre is the archetypal Romantic novel. Realistic and autobiographic details are mixed into a plot of romance and adventure (for example, Charlotte was treated cruelly at boarding school and she had loved too a married man hopelessly). Rochester is like a Byronic hero: he's dark, intense, impetuous and has a terrible secret in his past. His feelings are so powerful that he can hardly control them. Nature is very important in the novel for its symbolic meaning.
