Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) - Victorian novelist (economic, social and cultural changes) she was born in Thornton in a family in a Irish family his father was an anglican clergyman and she had 4 sisters and 1 brother after her mother's death, her aunt took care of them in a isolated village 1824: she was sent to Cowan Bridge Boarding School (terrible conditions – Jane Eyre) 1831: she was sent to Roe Head school to be educated but she soon went bbac to tutor her sisters 1835: she becomes teacher at Roe Head school 1838: she started to work as a governess (inspiration for her writing) she completed her studies in Brussel, where she felt in love with the headmaster (a married man) 1846: she self-published a collection of poems with Anne and Emily she accepted a marriage proposal and she died 3 years later of pneumonia she analyses the oppressiveness of a patriarchal society where job opportunities for women were limited, along with their right to self-determination (role of women in society) her heroines are strong-willed, passionate, self-confident Jane Eyre (1947) mixture of: – fictional autobiography (themes: provincial life, religion, city squalor) – Bildungsroman (a type of novel which follow protagonist's life from childhood to maturity) – love story – Gothic novel 1. landscapes desolated and difficoult to reach, somentimes dark castles 2. strong protagonists, indipendent, determinate and unconventional 3. supernatural elements 4. aristocratic, moody, solitary male protagonist plot first part Jane is a little girl who has lost her both parents, she lives at her uncle’s house her uncle dies, leaving a wife and three children (who hate Jane and treat her unfairly) her aunt decides to send her to Lowood School (a school for poor and orphaned children), a gloomy place where girls live in mortifying conditions, wearing stern uniforms, eating poor food and following a stricly daily schedule she teaches in the school in the last two years second part she start workin as a governesses in Thornfield Hall the owner of the house is a gentleman named Mr. Rochester she's attracted by his personality and Mr. Rochester also finds Jane’s honesty attractive strange events take place when Jane is at Thornfield (screams at, unexplained fires) she agrees to marry him, but when she finds out that he's already married to a lunatic woman (Bertha Manson), she flees from Thornfield Hall last part (Jane's life after she fled Thornfield) Jane visits Mr. Rochester his wife has died in a fire, so they get married the novel is written in first person (retrospect with flashback), the narrator is omniscent themes: love, passion, independence of woman (she ahs honest behaviour, intelligence)
