Citizenship assignment n.1 From “Rosa” to “The Anarchist Bastard” and “Go to Hell”: the condition of women as first- generation or second-generation Italian Americans is deeply affected by the patriarchal culture that still dominated their social and cultural background. Write a 300-word essay in which you analyze the three female characters/narrators and their stories, pointing out similarities and differences. Name: Giulia Mazzi Assignment n.: 1 The figure of the woman in the Italian American family was always subjected to the patriarchal ideal in which the only opinion that mattered was the man’s. This type of family is clearly represented in the stories of “Rosa”, “The Anarchist Bastard” and “Go To Hell”. The protagonist of the first story, Rosa, gets her parents’ permission to go to America only on the condition of taking care of her brother and not working, because the woman’s only role was taking care of her family. If anything bad happened, the female was always blamed because it had to be, at least in part, her fault, in fact when Rosa was abused she hoped to be killed because in that case she could have been just a victim, but surviving meant having to deal with the guilt of wondering if she could have avoided it, if it was her fault. Unfortunately this is an experience that binds two characters, Rosa and the protagonist of “Go to Hell”; who had been abused by her grandpa. Even though her grandma knew, she acted as if nothing ever happened, that way the only one who had to pay the price for this trauma was the victim. In this story the women's subjection to the man’s figure is also portrayed in the barbecue scene: while women must silently carry on their duties, the men can relax because they are the ones who make the decisions, who hold the power. Toni, a character from “The Anarchist Bastard”, acts differently; she doesn’t want to submit to her father’s injustices, but menacing her father's authority only leads to violence. This is how these women are kept under control, by being reminded everyday of their “inferiority” and the consequences of a possible rebellion. Italian-American women had to deal with a lot of unfairness due to the common idea of patriarchal family, which they thought was the only alternative, that way they could only follow this ideal, hoping to be safe, or rebel and suffer the consequences.
