Coco Chanel and Fashion Martina Cassataro «Fashion changes, but style endures» Biography  Gabrielle Bonheur «Coco» Chanel (August 1883 – January 1971)  A seamstress who used to sing at a cafe-concert that became a fashion designer and businesswoman  Etienne Balsan showed her the «rich life», consisting in diamonds, dresses, and pearls. One of Balsan's friends,  installed Chanel in an apartment in Paris, financed her first shops and influenced the conception of the Chanel look.  Chanel had begun designing hats, coming to open a fashion boutique, featuring clothing, hats, and accessories, later expanded to offer jewellery, dance costumes, and fragrances  Chanel, in 1927, owned five properties in Paris Chanel today Karl Lagerfeld now runs her own company, continues to use her iconic symbol and the ideas that inspired Chanel's original designs. Chanel n.5 Coco Chanel wanted to create a perfume with the smell of soap and freshly scrubbed skin, but she had trouble finding a perfumer who could achieve this. During the summer of 1920, she met Ernest Beaux, who worked in the centre of perfume industry. He came up with 10 samples and presenting them to Chanel, numbered 1 to 5 and 20 to 24. She picked number five. “A woman's perfume, with the scent of a woman” It is rumored that the fragrance was actually the result of a laboratory mistake, indeed Beaux's assistant had added a dose of aldehyde in a quantity never used before. Ninety years later Chanel n. 5 is arguably still the world's most iconic perfume. The scent, imbued with jasmine, rose, sandalwood and vanilla, was an instant success, partly due to some of Coco's ingenious marketing tricks.
