A comedy, noir and drama set in United States, it immediately became a cult movie for international cinematographic culture. The protagonist is Lester Burnham, a middle-aged man in crisis, depressed, unsatisfied and really bored from life. Besides, in this movie there are many others characters, such as his wife – a neurotic woman who is strongly unsatisfied for her position at work; his daughter, which is an insecure and embarrassed of her parents teenager which forces a bond with a particular guy. This latter one is a bizarre boy which evolves an ambiguous relationship with the protagonist, showing up all his obsessions and restlessness he has on Lester. As I see it, the great strength of this movie is the deep criticism that goes towards American society, it’s ideal of beauty and its being opportunistic, cheeky and cruel. In addition, more than anything, I’ve really appreciated putting a kind of anti-hero in the middle of the narration: in a society where every person is a winning, someone who is never weak or fragile and is always perfect, Ricky greatly contrasts the standard of the American average person. Especially, something that immediately attracted my attention is the fact that this character fights against the so called “performance society”, in which every person has a role to respect and a strict list of things to follow, to do, to have to not being judged as “strange”, “an outsider” or even “wrong”. The only criticism would be that perhaps some scenes could be too much fictional and not very credible. In conclusion, not only is this a complex and profound film, but it also tackles real problems in society, such as the condition of unhappiness that affect many people, who don’t do what make them happy in order to gratify other people; or like, for example, the difficulty of being authentic in a fake, nasty and materialistic world. As a result, for all the lovers of movies that make you think and stir the conscience that’s a cult you can’t lose!
