THE SOLDIER “The soldier” is a short poem written by Ruper Brooke in 1914 at the beginning of the First World War. We can divide the text into two stanzas: -In the first stanza, the poet tells the reader that if one day he will die in a foreign land his body will make that land a better place because a piece of England will be buried there. England is personification: she is like a mother who grows her children and teaches good values. We can understand that the poet loves his country for the beautiful landscape full of flowers, rivers and roads where man can live in close contact with nature. -In the second stanza the poet says that dying in war is ok because it means showing gratitude to the motherland for all the joy that she was able to give him. In this way the poet's soul will be purified and his spirit will be able to return to England and live in peaceful hearts. Who is the poet? -The poet is a soldier who talks to a person of his family (maybe a woman). -MAIN THEMES: patriotism, war. -From the text we understand that the poet will be proud to die in his land where he spent a life full of joy. -Brooke shows a classic romantic attitude about the war: he expresses strong patriotism and idealism probably because he didn’t have time to see the horrors of war. (VEDE LA GUERRA IN MODO POSITIVO, CI SI ARRUOLAVA VOLONTARIAMENTE). -This poem is a Petrarchan sonnet: it is composed of 14 lines divided into octaves and sextuplets. -The rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD EFG EFG
