He is considered a modernist writer and he introduces in his novels themes like human instinet, the dark forces of the inner self and man's attempt to conquer and control them. He focused also on the relationships between men and women, nature and man, instinct and intellect. THE QUALITY OH HIS PROSE Lawrence’s novel are characterised by their sharp realism. The writer had an ability to explore human insight and brings his characters and their personalities to life, through a combination of psychological precision and intense poetic feeling. LAWRENCE’S PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE Lawrence was not interested on psychological aspect. He believed in the power of love and emotions. According to Lawrence instinct and intuition were more important than reason. SONS AND LOVERS His best work is “Son and Lovers”. It is about Paul Morel, a young artist who grew up with a possessive mother. It is set in Nottinghamshire, with its mining villages and beautiful landscape. Lawrence focuses on the relationships between Paul Morel and three women (his mother, Mrs Morel, and two women, Miriam and Clara). INTERPRETATIONS OF THE NOVEL “Sons and Lovers” is one of the best representations of oedipal love. The protagonist Paul Morel loves his mother and hates his father. Lawrence in this novel, talks about his own experience, because he also loves his mother deeply. Mrs Morel also feels a strong love for her son. THE PLOT Paul and his family live in Nottinghamshire. They live an unhappy life. Paul's mother is unhappy with her husband. Paul is a very intelligent and sensitive boy who stands by his mother. His mother tries to help him rising from the working-class envitonment. When Paul finishes school, he stars working in a factory and there he meets Miriam, a former’s daughter. Paul's mother doesn't like Miriam. Their relationship is very difficult, and when Miriam gives herself to Paul, he reveals that he doesn't love her. So he begins another relationship with another woman, Clara who was married with another man. But after Clara is feeling sorry for her husband, so she decides to go back to him. Paul's mother discovers she has cancer and dies few months later. In the end Paul is left
