His father was a miner,a handsome man with enormous vitality. His mother belonged to a higher class and she had been a schoolteacher. David escaped the miner's destiny through education and poor physical health. He studied to become a teacher and he was accepted at Nottinghamshire University College, where he gained his teacher’s certificate. After the death of his brother,he became the centre of his mother’s emotional life. The story of their mutual love is told in Sons and Lovers. In 1908 he started teaching in a suburb of London and he experienced life in the metropolis. A crucial year for Lawrence was 1910,because his mother died. In 1912 he gave up his job, because of a recurring battle with pneumonia. In this year he met Frida, the German wife of French professor of Nottinghamshire University, with whom he eloped to Germany and Italy. They married after Frida’s divorce. In the period of the First World War,Lawrence wrote poems, such as The Rainbow and Woman in Love, and the war made him see the force of modern civilization as purely destructive. He spent the 1920’s travelling throughout the world and died of tuberculosis in France. SONS AND LOVERS -> autobiographical novel which records the emotional bond between the protagonist and his mother. THE RAINBOW and its sequel -> These novel was banned by the censors and WOMAN IN LOVE published in 1921. LADY CHATTERLEY’S LOVER -> acquired on the charge of obscenity and published in the 1960s. MAIN FEATURES OF LAWRENCE’S NOVELS Lawrence his a revolutionary force in English literature because of: ➔ His view of life ➔ His fight against the mechanical and artificial aspects of industrial civilization ➔ His penetrating analysis of relationship between sexes He was deeply concerned with emotional life. He believed that MAN is = mixture of culture and biology, natural impulses and instinct. MIND KNOWLEDGE = is the separation of human intellectual powers -> it can lead the individual to from natural impulses act wrongly and fall prey of degeneration . SEXUAL INSTINCT is the stronger natural impulse => only the relationship between man and woman based on sexual passions and sexuality can save humanity from self-destruction. Sex and History are in Lawrence two aspects of the same reality. Lawrence was dissatisfied with modern society, too intellectual and dehumanising. So he promoted a new awareness of the self and admiration of Nature. Seasons, natural objects,in particular flowers, symbolise the author's awareness of industrialisation and the chaotic city life. His concept of women went against their new role, which they acquired thanks to the movement of Suffragettes. He considered women as instruments for mankind’s happiness. STYLE: ● He used the traditional omniscient narrator; ● The point of view is that of the characters; ● The characters are portrayed through the techniques of showing and telling; ● Words and images are linked to the senses.
